Is your LO still Rear Facing in their carseat?

With the recent RF posts I thought I'd ask.  Is your LO still RF?  If not, when & why did you turn them FF? If not, when do you think you will turn them FF?

  • My daughter is still RF and I'd like to keep her that way until she is two years old. However, I may turn her around this summer, if I feel like she can't be cool enough in the backseat. We have really hot summers here in Central Texas and it was difficult last summer to keep her cool in the backseat. Her infant carrier allowed the cool air to move over her, but in her convertible (she's outgrown the infant carrier) the back is too high to allow the air to really cool her off. If she's constantly sweating and appears to be too hot and uncomfortable while RF, we will turn her around.

My car, unfortunately, does not have backseat A/C vents.

  • Still RF. I plan to keep her RF for as long as possible. She's tall, so I'm really hoping we can make it to 3 RF, but she might outgrow her seat before then.

  • Yes, he is still RF. I hope to keep him that way until at least two. I know I'll have to turn him by next winter though because he won't be able to RF in his boots next year.

  • DD is 18 months and 25 pounds. She is still RF.

I plan to leave her RF until at least two and then decide whether or not I will turn her around or leave her RF until the max for weight on our seat.

  • DD is 14 months and 22 pounds. She is still RF. The max weight for our carseat is 35 pounds so hoping to leave her RF for awhile.

  • DD is still RF. She met the height limit on the Roundabout so we switched her to DD1's Marathon. We are hoping to keep her RF until 2, as the AAP and our pedi now recommend.

We switched DD1 at 18 months. She outgrew the height limit in the Roundabout and there was no way we could fit the Marathon RF as well as an infant seat (the girls are 20 months apart) and still drive w/out my knees being in the dashboard.

  • DS is still RF. Our goal right now is 18month but I'd like to shoot 2yrs. (Just like my goal for BF was 6months and I went until 13 months - what can I say, I'm an overachiever).

How tall is your DS? Ours doesn't have a posted height limit. I can't imagine your DS would reach within one inch of the top of a convertable at his young age.

  • We turned DS FF as soon as he turned 1.  We were looking forward to it, too, because he started hating RF at about 10 months and would scream and whine about being in the car.

  • She is FF.  a couple months after she turned one.

I plan on switching this summer, too.  My kids will be 2.

It gets 110+ degrees in AZ and my car doesnt have air vents in the back nor does it have auto-start up so I cannot get it cool.  It's torture to sit in the back without getting the air conditioner blown on you.

It is safer. I'm a driving instructor and I deal with this sort of stuff all the time.

  • DD is 20 months old and still RF (except in the sitters car, she had to switch her in November because she is watching another baby and needs to getby DDs seat to get to the back row of her van.) I plan to keep her RF until 2 at least.

*Sigh* I wish she was going to be 2 this summer. I'd feel a lot better about potentially turning her around, but DH and I have discussed it already and we'd rather have her FF, than risk her getting overheated, which can be really dangerous in this part of Texas.

  • DD is still rear facing. She's 18 months but just hit 21 lbs. I plan to keep her RF as long as possible. We're going to have both car seats (DS's and hers) fitted together in my civic on Thursday so I'm hoping both seats will fit in the back RF since it's safest!
  • Just turned her FF last week.

  • DS is RF and will until at least 2. He is only 16lbs so I don't anticipate he'll even meet the FF weight limit until at least 18mo. I will likely leave him as long as possible in the SUV, he probably will need to FF sooner in my car because there isn't a lot of room for a larger seat RF and he'll outgrow the Combi by 2 height wise I would imagine.

  • We turned him FF not long after he turned 1 and hit the height requirement for FF in his convertible seat. I didn't want to do it, but DS hated RF he wanted to stand in the car seat and lean on the back so he could see out. It was a big battle everytime we got in the car. Now he just sits in the seat.

  • until she is 2! She still fits in her infant seat but we switched so she would not be attached to it when the infant comes along.

Summers are SUPER hot here and we have no AC vents in the back. I know she will be miserable but so will the  new baby and there is nothing I can do about that.

  • Cedric is still RF at 16 months old.  We are planning a summer vacation when he is 21 months old and that is when I plan on switching him to FF.  It will be 2 days in the car with him and hopefully a pregnant me and just figure that is a great time to switch him.

  • FF.  LO would always twist around while RF.  I would look in the rearview mirror and see his head turned since he was trying to see everything.  Since one point of the carseat is to keep them seated properly, we turned him around - and he now sits properly.

  • We FF and started doing so right after his first birthday when he met the requirements. He's so much happier now that he can look out the window. I was comfortable turning him around, he likes it, and it works for us.

Was his harness tight? How could he possibly turn around if the harness was tight?

DD is RF. She only weighs about 24lbs and is on the shorter side, so I'm hoping to RF until she's 2.5-3

  • We switched him FF last week at a little over 15 months. He is 32.5 inches, and 27 lbs.  We have the new higher weight limit Britax... it's awesome that it goes up to 40 lbs rear facing.. unfortunately, the straps really weren't meant to work for a kid who is tall and getting taller.  They barely fit and kept getting stuck.

  • Snuggle went to FF a couple of weeks ago.  I have a slipped disc and everytime I put him in my car RF it tweeked my back.  Every day.  Now that he is FF I don't hurt myself putting him in b/c I am doing it at another angle.

  • RF. Not sure when we will switch. No plans any time soon.

  • The twins are FF in the van because we had to take the seats out at one point to move some furniture or something so when I put them back in, we just turned them forward. They are still RF in the SUV because I have been too lazy in this cold, snowy weather to go out and move them around!
  • Still rear facing. Will move her when she outgrows the Radian XT she is in. She will likely outgrow it in height faster than weight. She is about 36" now and has lots of room still. But carseats are different in Canada - each country has different allowable heights and weight restrictions etc.

  • RF. We just got two (one for my car and one for DH's) Graco myride 65, so we plan to keep him RF as long as we can with those car seats.. Until he meets the hight/weight limit.. which is 40 lbs (not sure on the height limit). DH wants to FF sooner but he isn't fully aware of how much safer it is to RF. He will keep DS RF as long as I want to though.

  • wow it is great to see so many extended rear facers. DD is still RF'ing and  plan to keep her that way until 35lbs when she can't anymore.

  • Our boys are still RFing. Their two year stats were 35" and 26.10 lbs (Alex) and 34" and 27.11 lbs (Will) so I think they'll last a while in their TrueFits. We're hoping to hold out till age 3.

We'll need to get a second set of seats for DH's car since he might help with preschool dropoffs/pickups starting in the fall. They'll be 29 months then and I'm not sure what seats we'll get for his car, but they might FF in his car at that point and still RF in mine (which they'd ride in 95% of the time).
