Finger foods and gagging, so scary!

I am not enjoying this gagging stuff. We have tried three different times now and they just keep gagging. Tonight we tried the tiniest pieces of tofu and I about had a heart attack when they started to gag. Ugh.

9 mon appointment is soon, I will talk to pedi. I am really in no rush, but of course like for them to do stuff "on time". They eat purees really well and love everything, even the green stuff - so they are eating plenty.

  • I had this problem with Brady about the same age and I just stopped doing it for a few weeks and the second go at it worked!

  • Do you mean they're gagging as in they don't like the texture/taste or they're choking on the food? If they're choking on the food, I've always given my girls big hunks of fruits and veggies that they can hold on to. The baby lead weaning principles say that babies can better regulate bite size that way and it reduces gagging on foods. Just a thought. I don't know if that will help in your case but my girls have never choked on anything actually.

Its like they are choking. We have tried adding texture to purees and they gag, and now the tofu. That makes total sense about the bigger chunks, although still scares me to give it to them. I will prob just hold off till I talk to pedi.

  • Ugh, yeah, I definitely don't miss that stage. Just take it super slow. Remember, solids are a completely new/different texture for them so it'll take a little bit of time for them to adjust to it. My son had a sensitive gagreflex but he did really well on puffs and those mum-mums, both dissolve really fast. Then we eventually moved on to Cheerios and it all went uphill from there. Also try rice, beans, banana, peas...you know, mushy foods.

  • Gagging is super normal.  Whenever this happened we stopped that food for awhile.  My son did it on pasta a few times.

It is very normal for them to do that if they can't chew it completely.

  • DD did this. It took awhile for her to eat finger foods. We finally gave her some baby mum mums and she sucked on those a bit. Then we moved to chunkier purees and moved on from there. She was definitely a bit behind the curve when it came to eating finger foods. But I just had to remind myself that these tastes and textures were all new to her.

I wouldn't rush it, and definitely wouldn't worry about it. They'll do it when they are ready.

  • Thanks girls. We will def keep taking it slow.
