Cloth Diapering

I can't find any CD creams that really work!

Can your recommend yours? Here's what I've already tried:

CA Baby

CJs BUTTer

Grandma El's

Northern Essence

Plain old cornstarch

None of them will clear up a rash. They work fine as a preventative measure but we still get rashes occassionally and then we end up switching to disposables because I can't find anything else that will work. Ideas?

  • I've started using A&D, with fleece liners. I was using CA Baby, but it started staining my diapers, so I was putting down a liner anyway... and figured that as long as I was doing that, might as well use something that is a LOT more effective and a LOT cheaper.

DS pooped a ton the other day and got a little rashy. It was almost entirely cleared up after a night in A&D and a fitted under a wool cover. When the same problem happened a few months ago, it took days to clear up with CA Baby. Plus, I got a HUGE tub of A&D for the cost of a tiny tube of CA Baby.

Are you sure it's a rash and not yeast?

Corn starch feeds yeast. I wouldn't use it on baby bits for anything. I encountered this problem with a client of mine (I'm a caregiver) who was constantly trying to cut costs on things despite the fact that her husband was practically a millionaire. She started using corn starch to keep her breasts from sweating/chaffing during the day instead of paying the copay for her nystatin powder and got a YI so bad under them it resembled shingles, and took weeks to clear up.

I know a lot of ladies on another diapering board that buy the cheap $3.50/yard fleece at walmart and cut it up into liners for diaper cream in their cloth.

  • Only other one that I've tried that isn't on your list is Bum Bum Balm. We used it, but then switched to CJs BUTTer but we only switched because of CJs' rave reviews on here and because I didn't like having to dig out the balm from the tin. It's a solid at room temp, so it's like a lip balm. Worked well, though.

  • CJs works great for us. I would look into WHY he's getting the rash, as pp suggested. Could it be a yeast or detergent issue, since the problem clears once you stop using the diapers?

  • Earth Mama Angel Baby is fantastic. Works over night to clear up a rash and is CD safe, so you don't need a liner. We love the stuff (and use it on cuts and scrapes too, lol)

  • We've been battling a rash for a while and I'm finally getting results with desitin and a fleece liner. But I'm not sure if we have a detergent issue or not yet. I'm going to try with just the liner after it clears up and see what happens.

  • We use Boudreaux's Butt Paste with liners for a rash and when she doesn't have a rash we use CJ's BUTTer as a protector on her bum.

Ditto.  What kind of diapers are you using?  Prefolds, pockets?  And what kind of detergent and what is your wash routine?  That could be the issue.

We had luck with Northern Essence but we used both the diaper salve and the better butter balm.  The better butter balm was great for yeast rashes.
