Soy & Dairy Free Mamas- Found some bagels

Pepperidge Farm Bagels- I have Cinnamon Raisin- are soy and dairy free.  They have a circled U and pareve on them.  They aren't healthy (there is a long list of ingredients), guess that is typical for bagels and I never noticed before I began studying labels, but they satisfy.

Just toast and put a little of the red label (soy/dairy free) Earth Balance buttery spread on them and you feel almost like you aren't eating a restricted diet.  Enjoy!

I guess so.  I think I remember one of the numerous ingredients being high fructose corn syrup, which is in everything now, and I try to avoid that, but I would probably give occasionally (even freeze first for a teething tool).

  • thanks!

also, a related question...I'm newly soy-free (as in, today...) - i happened to be looking at other bagels yesterday (from the chain einstein's), and saw they have soy.  there was this disclaimer - "Soy is only present as soy bean oil or soy oil.  Highly refined soybean oil does not usually cause an allergic reaction."

is that true?  do you find that you're able to have stuff with soy oil or soybean oil, or should I avoid those too?

    Your LO is adorable.

Yes, it is true that some people allergic to soy don't react to those items.  I avoid EVERYTHING soy, including soybean oil and soy lethicin (sp?).  DS was very sensitive, I haven't even been eating things made in the same facility as dairy/soy.  I didn't do a challenge with soybean oil, so IDK if at some point I would have been okay.  I waited 9 months to start with a food challenge, and I went right for the gusto (dairy and soy), but many start sooner.

My advice is to eliminate all sources for now.  In a month or so (when LO has a good stretch of no GI distress or issues), try eating something with the soybean oil ("food challenge") and wait a week monitoring reaction.  If none, try again the next week and monitor, etc.

    GL!
