Really?! A D&C?!

So I went to see the lactation consultant today and she asked if I was still bleeding. I said it had stopped for 4-5 days or so, but was back and red, like a light flow period. She said if I was still bleeding at my 6 week appt (in 2 weeks) the doc might schedule a d&c?! I have never heard of this! I feel like I would refuse. I had a c-section, so they should have done a good job of cleaning me out and that seems excessive?! I've heard of doctors putting you on the pill. Ugh...the thought completely creeps me out. Anyone else heard of that?

  • I've had a friend and also my mom who have had D&Cs done (excessive PP bleeding and menopause issue, respectively). Hopefully you won't need one!

  • Yes, I've heard of it. However, it is completely normal for you to still be bleeding at 4 weeks. Some women take longer than others for the bleeding to go away. I wouldn't stress out about it. Odds are everything is perfectly normal.

  • Wow. I was still bleeding--probably about a light period, too--at 4 weeks and thought nothing of it. I'm completely healed now, and the doc said everything looked perfect at my 6 week appointment. It seems really excessive to worry you about that so soon!
  • If it's any consolation, my 6wk pp visit was 6wks 4 days after DS was born & I stopped bleeding at 5wks 6days. It got better around 4weeks but came back again within 3-4days. I wouldn't stress about it, my OB said that it was not the norm but it was nothing to worry about. GL

  • I was still bleeding until 5 weeks 3 days.  My 6 week appointment was at exactly 6 weeks and they didn't even ask me how long it took me to stop bleeding.  I wouldn't worry too much about it- I think it is very common to be bleeding at 4 weeks PP.
  • There are legit reasons to need one pp, but just bc you're still bleeding isn't enough.
  • a friend of mine was still bleeding very heavy at 6 weeks and having some pain, so they did an ultrasound and found that she still had some placenta inside, so they had to do a d&c...but I hope they wouldn't just do one ONLY b/c you were bleeding....that doesn't seem like enough of a reason

  • are you passing clots? My friend is 7 weeks pp and still bleeding (but she is also passing clots) and they put her on the pill. They told her if it's not gone by the time she starts her 3rd pack of pills they would do a d&c.  Could it maybe be your period coming earlier than you expected?

  • I bled off & on until about 8 weeks PP, and my doctor said that that was pretty normal.  He said the "standard" PP healing time for a c-section is actually closer to 8 weeks than the usual 6 weeks.  My bleeding was pretty regular for about the first 5 weeks, and then it came and went daily, depending on my activity level.

I'm pretty sure before they'd schedule you for a D&C, they'll have you come in for a trans-vaginal u/s to make certain that you're bleeding from any remaining plancental parts, or if it's just normal healing.  I wouldn't worry at this point whatsoever.

  • I didn't have a c-section but I bled until about 2 days before my pp appt at 6 weeks. Seems a bit excessive to do a D&C at that point.
  • The same thing happened to me with the bleeding. It stopped for a couple of days, then came back red and clotty. I asked the OB about it today and she said it's perfectly normal and I could continue bleeding past 6 weeks.

  • I had a d&c after my first son was born.  I was still bleeding at my 6wk appt and the doctor told me that if I was still bleeding at 8 (or was it 10?) weeks to come for an u/s to see if there was leftover placenta.  It turns out there was, so they did a d&c when I was about 3 months pp.

My pp bleeding stopped at about 5 or 6 weeks with this baby.
