Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Tylenol/Ibuprofen question

DS currently has had a fever (along with congestion) for the past day and a half.  The pedi said to give tylenol or motrin as needed.  My question is, for how many days can I do this?  I have been giving him Motrin every 6 - 8 hours since yesterday.  If his fever continues, which it has, is it ok for him to be given it through tomorrow for instance?  Also, for those of you who alternate b/t tylenol and ibuprofen how do you do that and does it seem to help more?  Thanks in advance.  I realize I could make a call to the doctor's office, but I thought I would start here first.

Re: Tylenol/Ibuprofen question

  • DD was sick with a high fever a few weeks ago. (Hovered around 102-103, but topped at 105).  We started with a luke warm bath.  Then alternated Tylenol/ibuprofen every 4 hours for two days.  With the meds her temp stayed down around 100.7-101. DH or I would wake up and check on her when it was time for her meds, if her temp was still below 101 we wouldn't wake her to give meds so there were a few times that it was 6 or 8 hours between doses.

It says on my ibuprofen bottle to not give more than 4 doses in a 24 hr period, and to not use for more than 10 consecutive days.  So I think 2-3 days is fine.

  • Everything PP said.  Also, our pedi told us to take our LO in if they have had a fever over 3 days to take them in.

  • For a stubborn fever I alternate Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours per the pedi.  Also here: https://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t088900.asp  But my DS runs really high fevers (sometimes over 104)
