Okay...I had gotten about 10 hits of bumpies who lived/live around the Langely area. We have found out we are due to PCS around the 24th of this month! I have to find a property soon. I have found 3 rentals and am emailing the reality companies (militarybyowner.com). May I have your opinion, if you can pinpoint the area, about the safety, niceness, or quietness of these potential neighborhoods (I won't have the actual addresses until I hear from the realtors). Ya know, basically if you would live there!
They are all in Hampton w/in 5 miles from base:
Primrose Ave.
Lynnwood Dr. (my favorite property)
Banister Dr.
Thanks ahead of time if you can help!
Re: Attn Langely Ladies!
Sorry 1ht, but im from williamsburg originally and DH was stationed at Langley before pcsing to Luke. Im not sure where youve tried, but Id look for somewhere in Yorktown or Poquoson...there are only select parts of Hampton or Newport News that arent 'rough'. If you get specific addresses, repost and I can let you know. Also they just rebuilt alot of housing in the past few years and its pretty nice...I commented by the locations...
Wow, thank you! And now I'm a little confused b/c I have been told Hampton was the safest choice. I will try Yorktown again. And I remember hearing Poquoson was sketchy, not Hampton! A big thing for DH is he wants to be really close to base (we wanted to live on base and can't b/c of our dog). All 3 of these are close to base...I will have to see if the Yorktown properties are. And also, a lot of the Yorktown properties are townhomes, which won't work w/ our horrible dogs! So lesson learned, being military and having 2 large crazy dogs is not smart.
Definitely untrue about Hampton being the safest choice...there are definitely some REALLY rough spots. Like right off of the the base, I believe its King Street--down towards Buckroe Beach (youll learn the areas once you get there)...NOT nice. I also learned to stay away from numbered streets there and the closer you get the water, sometimes means a little rougher too. I'll send you a PM with my email/FB and you can email/FB me if you need anything else.
ETA: Oops, forgot to say something about Poquoson. I never knew it to be sketchy. The houses are a bit older I believe but unless things have changed in 2 years, it wasnt too bad.
I agree with PP about the properties. The second one might be ok but isn't the best area either. I didn't drive by the exact street but have been in the area. I couldn't find the third one.
I agree about there not being many decent areas in Hampton. Michael's Woods is the only one I would live in. Poquoson is a much nicer little town and York County as a whole is a better area with better schools (not that you need them yet).
I hope that you are having better luck with the realtors than we had. This is the same time of year we came in last year and nobody wanted to help us. We definitely found that this is one of the areas where you cannot get much for your BAH. These were the 2 main reasons that we ended up on base. It sucks about your dogs.
Poquoson is not sketchy. It has a very weird dynamic though because it has people living in poverty and people who are very well off. The other thing about Poquoson is that it has a reputation for being racist. It is predominately white. I used to work for a foster care agency in the area and our parents who lived there would not accept foster children who were not white because they did not want to subject the child to living there. My friend's son played in a basketball game there and his team was met with racial slurs being yelled from the stands during the game.
Also, Poquoson is below sea level so that really sucks come hurricane season. After Isabel a few years ago people were living in FEMA trailers a year later and their insurance companies were making them raise their houses.
I live on the south side but if I was going to live on the peninsula I'd pick Yorktown.
I go to physical therapy in Fox Hill and it seems decent but I am there at 7 am so I don't get a true picture. It is very close to base though and he shouldn't hit much traffic at all. I'm from Jersey and I think the traffic here is horrible.
If you PM me once you are here we can grab a coffee and I can help you get acclimated.
Thank u so much! I'm not too familiar w/ this forum yet...I'm gonna try to add u as a friend so I don't forget to contact u. I would love to meet up...I'd much rather get help from locals than figure everything out the hard way!

These three are in decent locations and are right at or just a smidge above BAH.
OMG thanks so much! I have been so stressed and I love all the help I'm getting on this forum. I'm actually signing the lease for one of these properties tomorrow (-: Yay!!! We have similar taste (-:
Don't go with the home on Aster Way . . . I own a house in that neighborhood (Called Gardenside). We moved from there last summer, but in the spring of 2010 our next door neighbors (literally a 2 min walk from Aster Way) had their house broken into and their car stolen. About two weeks before or after, I don't remember which, another family in the same neighborhood was robbed at gunpoint and the robbers also used tasers on them. Kind of scary stuff . . . they sent letters out to the homeowners association but I personally wouldn't recommend living there. It's a nice looking neighborhood, but it borders a bad area of Hampton.
It's also next to Fox Hill, which is really nice.
I just moved from Hampton to here. I don't know the apts you'r talking about, but I can tell you that there may be crime issues near the Lynnwood Drive one. My apt complex was on Marcella Rd (near intersection of Marcella & Colliseum) and there were some vehicle break in issues there. Apt complex was pretty good aside from the vehicle larceny though.
If you are able to afford it, I'd also recommend Yorktown or Poquoson. Newport News and Hampton are doable, but the sketch factor can vary pretty dramatically.
