Talk to me about crib mattresses

How much should I spend? Are there any special "features" that I need to know about? It seems so basic, but the prices vary so widely I'm wondering what the differences are and do they matter. I don't want to buy the cheapest one out there, but I don't think the baby needs anything too fancy, right?

Re: Talk to me about crib mattresses

  • We have this Colgate Classica 3 mattress, and have been very happy with it. I have no idea where it fits in the scheme of prices (it's $159), and no comparison, but I would get it again.

  • I figured that baby will spend more time in his crib and on his mattress than anywhere else the first year+. So, I wanted that to be the healthiest place possible. For us, that meant a solid wood crib either unfinished or with an eco-friendly finish and the most organic/eco-friendly mattress we could find. For us, the answer was the very cheap Ikea Sniglar crib ($70) paired with the very not cheap Naturepedic mattress ($300). The mattress is the most expensive baby item we have, but I feel irt is worth it. We were lucky to get it as a gift, but would've paid that ourselves had we not. We looked at many "natural" options for mattresses and Naturepedic didn't have compromises for us in materials, production, etc. The others we looked at (like anything with soy) seemed green-washy.
  • I think we paid maybe $100 or $150 for a basic one.  Baby #3 is using it now and it's in great shape.  We didn't put too much thought into it (though I admire pixieprincess's philosophy about it!).  From what I understand you just want to make sure it's very firm, to prevent SIDS, and don't get a used one.

  • We just bought a basic new one for each kid.  I think we went middle of the road about $100-$150 each time.
  • We just got one from Target which I think was around $100 or so and it has worked fine.

  • We got the Colgate Classica--and don't remember if it was 1,2 or 3. Whichever one Baby Bargains recommended. Of course, his crib is currently where we store stuff as LO doesn't sleep there! But he will one day, I'm told.

  • We got the Colgate Classica 3. I think I ordered it off amazon because it was cheapest. Word to the wise if you get that one - because it is so light I thought I'd put it in the crib myself... yeah. The fit is so tight that I had to rejigger it to get it in and one of the grommets on the side scratched the back part of the crib. No

  • We also got the Colgate Classica. It's very firm and seems like it could withstand more than one kid (we plan to have 2).
  • I got an organic Naturepedic mattress, like pixie. If you consider how much time babies spend in their cribs, spending a little more made sense to me.

  • I think we have a Serta.  I know it's extra firm.  I opted to go for a mid-priced mattress and then got an expensive organic mattress cover.  I also knew I'd be using the ultimate crib sheet, so I wasn't super worried about having to buy lots of mattress covers for leaks.

  • Thanks everyone for your input! This is just one of the many things I'm researching right now as a first-time mom. It can be overwhelming and it helps to have some suggestions from you moms.

  • We got the Colgate Classica 3.  We just went off of others' input and the reviews in Baby Bargains.
