Regular bassinet vs. Pack 'n Play with bassinet

This topic was probably already discussed and I missed it, but any mommies to be or 2nd time (or more) mommies that have any thoughts, I would appreciate.

Little background.  We are definitely doing a bassinet.  My husband has a daughter already and he (they) used one when she was born and feels that it was very helpful to have for those first few months.  I don't know nuttin' 'bout no babies, so I will go with his advice.

I am one of those uber practical people.  I am also one of those people that hates parents that their homes looked like Toys R Us exploded.  (your kid doesn't need that much stuff!!)  We have a fairly large home, but the way the layout of the main floor is, we can't accommodate a ton of crap, basic, needed items yes, TRU explosion, no.  The practical side of me has a hard time with some of the "baby stuff" because it is so expensive and is used, in some cases, for like a few months (i.e. a bassinet).

We had decided against a PNP only because they do take up a lot of room and wasn't really our parenting style, but the more I think about it, one with a bassinet attachment might be a good way to go.  It would get plenty of use (way more than a few months) and after baby moves to their crib, we can use it on our main floor to "contain" baby while we cook or clean or something.

So my question, have you used them, what did you think, etc, etc??

Re: Regular bassinet vs. Pack 'n Play with bassinet

  • When I baby sat my friends kid, she had the PNP w/bassinet and all of us loved it.  It was kept in the living room and moved into their room at night (during the first few weeks, until she went into her crib, then it just stayed in the living room), and it grew with the kid.  it is well worth it for the investment and space.

Thats exactly what I will be doing

Hey, we are due date twins!!

  • We used a PnP with bassinet for DS, because I also thought it was the most practical choice. To be honest though, I really wish we had the bassinet. We didn't end up using the PnP all that much, because it also just didn't end up being our parenting style and the bassinet would have taken up a lot less space in our room.

ETA: I have no problem with people using PnP, there is no judgment in my saying it ended up not being our parenting style. I definitely thought we would use it more. DS was usually just corralled in another way or DH and I were with him. [shrugs shoulders] Just how it ended up being.

  • We keep going back and forth on this issue, too. We are first-time parents, so I don't have any advice really to offer.

We really need to get a pack-n-play because our families live at least 45-90 minutes away from us. When we visit, we visit for the day, and the babe will need a place to sleep, which is why we need a pnp.

However, the Mr. really wants to get this cradle. I just feel as if it is superfluous to get a cradle and a pnp with a bassinet feature (because they all seem to have it nowadays). Though, if he wants the cradle that much, we will definitely get it and lend it out and/or keep it for future children.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I know people who had cradles that loved them, and I know people that used the pnps and loved them. If you don't want a lot of extra baby things in your house, then the pnp might be the way to go. Like you said, you can use it elsewhere once the baby grows out of the bassinet feature and you can also use it at grandma's house, too. Good luck with your decision!

  • I'll be getting a bassinet free from a friend (thankfully!) but we'll also be buying the pack n play with a bassinet as we'll need it for traveling over the next 2 years =) but i really wanted the bassinet most for the bedroom so i lucked out though i was looking at 2nd hand ones online and they are very resonable as they are used such a short period of time the quality on them is still pretty new.

  • The PnP with bassinet makes the most sense.  Baby can sleep in the bassinet portion of the PnP in your room at night until you transition him/her to the crib.

At this point, you'd be done with a traditional bassinet (waste!) but you can keep the PnP for trips out of town, for napping in other parts of the house, as a changing station in the living room, or just fold it up neatly for use with baby #2.

We will get a PnP w/ bassinet and forgo the traditional bassinet.

  • We've gone back and forth on this, and decided on sticking w/ the PnP/bassinet combo, mostly for the conveinence, since we will be moving about 6-8 weeks after the babe is born, and won't have our permanant home for at least a month or two after that (yay government jobs!), so it seems like the most practical decision for us. Some close friends of ours just had a child in November and used the PnP setup and loved it, so I'm hoping we'll have a similar experience.

  • I think the PNP with a bassinet is way more practical than buying just a bassinet.

Plus, if you travel to other people's homes and stay the night, the PNP can act as a travel crib as well.

  • A regular basinett will be used for a few months and then stored for years.  From my experience, they do not "fold and store" well at all.  I hate our basinett because it has been sitting there unused for 15 months.  We also have the PnP w Basinett and that worked just as well and we use it now as a toy storage bin.  We will use it w #2.

  • I would totally just get the PNP if it can fit in your bedroom.

Sadly, our master bedroom is quite tight, so I'm thinking that a PNP (which would be nice) just won't fit. So, we'll be doing the brassinett and then will get a PNP as well for travel, living room, future time out, etc.
