Friends (sitcom) & TTC

I'm slowly making way through all 10 seasons of Friends. I know I'm a dork but I love and miss that show! Anywho...I'm on season 9 and it's so funny/weird to be at a point where I understand all of the TTC references.

During that season (after Rachel has a baby), Monica and Chandler decide to start their family. Monica starts talking about all of these things that were completely foreign to me 7-8 years ago and it went right over my head at the time!

There is mention of OPKs, scheduled sex, DTD while you have a full house (or other inconvenient baby-making situations), Mind Fetus just hours after they DTD and impatience to test with an HPT.

I never would have guessed that this would be my reality some day. I know at some point M & C discover they can't conceive on their own. I'm sure that episode will make me cry hysterically for them.

Any other Friends fans? Did you pick up on these references the first time around?

LOVE Friends and I've seen some of those episodes in the last few months and picked up on them then, but not when I was watching them years ago.

I love friends and definitely didn't pick up on that then. I didn't even remember that they made all those references. I just remember them wanting a baby. My how perspective changes!

I love Friends! I totally did not pick up on the references you speak of. I was still in High School when the show was on, so it is not surprising that I didn't pick up on it or understand it. Maybe I should start watching again, now that it will all make more sense to me!

I loved Friends, but since I'm younger than them I didn't relate to the show at all when it was on. I mean, I liked it and watched it but I was in high school so it was always grown up stuff they were dealing with.

I never thought I'd be able to relate to the baby making stuff. My mom got pregnant on the first try with me and my brother and took 9 months with my sister (but she was 37 so I always just thought that was why), so I always grew up with the notion that once you had sex-bam! Instant pregnancy. And we did get pregnant the very first time we had unprotected sex. Not the first cycle, the first time. Until the miscarriage I thought this was just stuff other people had to deal with.

Funny how life can humble you and help you empathize with the struggles of others.

I saw an episode not too long ago with Monica talking about OPKs... and wondering where they all went. When Chandler mentioned he might have peed on a few to see if he was ovulating. LOL I think I would kill DH if he did that!

I totally own all 9 seasons (hey, they were on sale for $10 each a few years ago!) I haven't watched season 9 since TTC, but it's so funny how much I would probably understand.

I remember (just like you) them wanting a baby but I never noticed any of the TTC details... oh to be ignorant again!

I LOVE Friends! I'm a huge, dorky fan and own all 10 seasons. I definitely didn't pick up on all of Monica and Chandler's references the first time around. However, even as a high school student, I knew that it was completely ridiculous that Phoebe got a positive HPT just hours after her IVF transfer. That episode drives me crazy!

lol I was so annoyed by that episode. I kept telling my DH how that was complete bullsh!t! I was also slightly jealous Embarrassed .

I loved that show! I hated the episode where Pheobe test postive hours after her IVF. I thought that was stupid and I had no idea at the time how long it took to test positive.

Omg I LOVE Friends! Hands down my favorite show. I remember the whole IF troubles with Monica and Chandler but thinking "geez, wth" and not thinking much more about it. I didn't really understand the whole ttc craziness at the time but yeah it totally makes sense now. Its kind of funny how they captured some of those real life situations that are so common.

You'd think the surrogate would have had a couple of ultrasounds at some point to find out how many babies she had in her ute! Thank goodness that show was meant to be funny because they sucked at accuracy. However, it's still my favorite show and some day I WILL own all 10 seasons Big Smile .

It was a surrogate? I thought it was a KU teen and they were adopting? Wasn't it Anna Farris? Maybe they didn't end up adopting but I remember her being on it and having these crazy stories about the father of the baby.

I hate when shows/movies/commercials have TTC inaccuracies, it makes me mad. I hate the common one where some woman is throwing up and then is like, "Hmmm, maybe I'm pregnant?" As if they got morning sickness before their missed period.

Actually, they adopt. The mother chooses them because the files get mixed up and she thinks Chandler is a doctor and Monica is a pastor (which they then pretend to be). I remember this because when the truth comes out and she starts to change her mind, Chandler gives a beautiful speech that makes me cry every time.

As far as the surprise twin goes. Apparently the doctors know she's having twins, but the mother thinks when the doctor's tell her both heartbeats are good he means hers and the baby's

You and Ginger are right! They do adopt! (can you tell I've haven't made it to season 10 yet to refresh my memory? lol) It is Anna Faris and she is as dumb as a doornail so her being oblivious about the twins makes complete sense. I can't wait to finish up season 9 and see Monica and Chandler get their babies. Awwww Smile .

I remember her talking about the father of the baby and not knowing who it was, and Chandler explaining that you can't get pregnant from "that"...and then Monica asking "Wait, was it the thing we rarely do, or the thing we never do?"...'twas funny.

AshB62: You're so lucky! I want the DVDs so badly I'm currently borrowing my sister's complete set. I'm thinking Black Friday at Target will be my golden opportunity. We have reruns but they come out at 11pm I think and by then I'm asleep.
