11 week old with a cold....help

My LO has a cold possible Upper resp infection.  For now they told me I cant do anything but nasal saline washes... have you tried that with a screaming 11 week old... its not pleasent, and I Iam afraid im going to drop him becuase he moves so much and I feel like im going to drown him.  i tried the little noses decongestion drops and the johnson and johnsons vapor bath and the hot steamy bathroom.

On top of little one being sick both me and my hubby are sporting severe colds too.  hubby test pos for the flu and has been held up in our bedroom, i tested neg but still feel like i might have it too.  the swab test is only 80 % accurate... nice.. my syptoms are way worse than his...

anyway i guess what i am asking is if anyone as any ideas on how to make LO feel better... and mom and daddy too :)

TIA

  • I am so sorry. It is hard enough when you are sick, but taking care of a sick infant is so much harder.

The saline nose drops really do help. It is easier for me, though, if I put DD down on her changing pad before trying the drops. She wiggles far too much otherwise. Have you tried a humidifier?

  • Try doing the saline drops right before a diaper change then suction LO out. This is what I do to give them a minute to loosen things up. Maybe if you can keep LO suctioned you won't have to do saline drops as frequently. Maybe a humidifier would help also. And if you think its respritory related keeping it cooler in your house will help too. Which I'm sure you don't have to your thermostat set like I do since you are in Central Florida. This is all I can think of other than what you are already doing. HTH

Thanks... I will try to let them sit a bit longer before I suction his nose... its to the point now that when we head to the changing table he starts to panic... and it breaks my heart and if he even sees the bulb syringe he flips out.. poor baby..

Yes its been really warm here the last few days so the ac is on lol... thanks for the advice :)

my family is too... my grandfather was adopted from Ireland, but once they got him over here, the family decided they could not handle another child... so i dont know to much of my family history over there, working on it though....i love all things Irish too.. this will prob sound werid but when i got married I couldnt give up my last name so I am hyphanted(so cant spell that lol)  i think it bothered my hubby a bit but i just couldnt give it up... nice to meet you though.... :)

  • I agree with PPs about doing the saline on the changing table, and letting the saline sit for at least 60 seconds before suctioning their nose.

Also, your LO is too little to be using those decongestant drops. Those might be causing chemical rhinitis, and adding to your LOs congestion. You also can't use anything like Vicks Baby Rub at this age either.

Sorry, I know it's hard when they are so little. DD is just now getting over a cold turned double ear infection, and it's no fun.

A cold or a hot humidifier?
