Nervous for 18 mo. appointment tomorrow

LO has his 18 month well baby visit tomorrow. I am nervous about his weight (though, he feels heavier to me). What has me more concerned is his language development. He has four or five spoken words and three or four signs. He may have a few more "words", but I have not picked up on them yet. This is, to me, a bit behind the curve. It seems that if there is a range to achieve a milestone, he typically hits it at the later end of the range. So, I am just nervous. Our pedi is wonderful, so I'm not worried about him over or under reacting, or getting upset with me. . .

Well, I am off to bed. We have to be out the door by 8:15am, which, for this SAHM, is a monumental task! I'll report back tomorrow.

  • Everything will be fine! I bet before you know it he will talking so much you will start to wonder where he learned this all from!

That's what I tell myself! There will, soon enough, come a time that I wish he had a mute button! LOL!

  • Good luck.  I'm worried about Gwen's weight at her next appointment too.  The worrying never ends!

You will, trust me you will! Today Preston kept going on and on how he wanted Potatoe Head and I was mean for not letting him have it.

Jordana went on and on about how she wanted Nuggets and not as she call  rockawwlee (broccoli).

Than the twins started fighting because as Jordana said "Pat took my cookie and he bad mama, time out now" than Preston "JoJo you bad not me"

  • Hi!  Reed was delayed with his expressive speech.  I can talk to you more about our experience and what helped us.  I will send you a PM.

    Good luck tomorrow!

  • Aww everything will be fine.  I was nervous about Jude's as well because every single visit he falls further and further on the height charts.  If DH and I were short people, I wouldn't think a thing of it.  But I'm above average for height with a really tall family and DH is average height.  He was still on the charts but had dropped again and was at 10% and his weight was 30%.  He only grew BARELY a 1/4 of an inch in three months!  Nor had he gained even one more pound.  So then I was worried since those numbers were far apart that he had a weight problem but the pedi laughed and said that the differences don't concern them until it's more the other end of the chart.  Oh and don't worry another second about the language thing.  When we were going through the developmental part, she asked how many words DS could say and I told her the number and then said apprx how many he could sign and she said that all they look for at this age is that they say 5 words... and they don't even have to sound like the actual word but just a consistent sound that they associate with things.  :)  Grant is going to have a GREAT appointment!  :)

  • I totally under report how many words G has.  I think I answered 10-20 at her 18 month and my husband flipped out on me when I told him that.  He is most likely right but I don't want to over report and then if there is an issue miss an opportunity to get help.

My point is 1) I bet Grant has more "words" than you say he does and 2) Even if he doesn't he will soon, boys take a little longer with language having 4-5words and being able to sign tells me he is communicating and that is most important.

    Good luck!!

  • I was worried at 18 months too. Elizabeth only had 5-10 words plus her signs and animal noises. Pedi was completely happy with that and said signs and noises also counted as words to her. And now in just two months, E's up to around 50+ words and adding more almost every day.

I bet Grant (and you) will do just fine. Good thoughts coming your way!!

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • GL! I was super nervous at Hayden's 18 month due to weight issues. It ended up not being as bad as I thought. If he is behind in language development, getting speech therapy is a great thing.

  • Is he going to DeWitt for this? I have seen you post on Military Board and I thought since you live in Alexandria, maybe you go to DeWitt for care. My girls were seen at DeWitt for their 18 month appt. and they were behind on their language and the pedi. referred them for testing. We had to go to Walter Reed first for hearing tests because DeWitt couldn't get them in within 30 days. So I made the appts. and we never got it done. That was last year when we had snow storm after snow storm and then we ended up moving back to FL at the end of Feb. So I just waited until we got settled in FL and then at their 2 year well baby we got the referral for testing because they didn't catch up between 18 and 24 months.

Anyway they refer you to Fairfax county schools for early intervention and they required the hearing tests. I dont' know more on it because we didn't actually go through with it since we ended up moving and are now doing speech here in Florida, but it is private, not county.
