How many bottles for EFF??

I am going to be EFF from the start.  How many bottles should I buy/register for?

Thanks.

Re: How many bottles for EFF??

  • I didn't buy or register for any bottles.

BRU gave me one when I registered (which is still in it's box) and the hospital sent us home with a bunch of 2 ounces ones...those were the ones we used. C didn't take a bottle a ton, and then we went to a straw cup rather than water in a bottle.

  • I would just get a few different brands to start and see what works best.

We use Born Free.  I have 6 bottles.  DS has about 7 or 8 bottles a day.  I hand wash after each use.  We have the small short bottles but now that DS is eating more we are going to get the tall ones.  I should have just bought the big ones to begin with.

  • hmp&mrj: do you sterile them between use? Or just wash in hot water?

  • We have 7 and DS has 6 feedings a day. I rinse the bottles in hot soapy water at the end of the day when he goes to bed and then run them in the sterilizer which fits 6 bottles at a time. I recommend skipping the small bottles and buying 9oz (or more...that's just the size Avent ones we have) bottles from the start since you won't be able to use the 4oz ones for very long.
  • We were EFF as well too from the start.  I got 8 bottles of each size, 4 oz & 8 oz.

  • I have 12 because I'm lazy and don't want to handwash during the day. I run them through the dishwasher every night.  He would have up to 10 bottles a day in the first week or so, but after that it's really been more like 8-9, if that many.  So you would probably be fine with only 8.

I too got the smaller bottles and am kicking myself for that one - I would suggest like previous posters to just go ahead and get the big ones.

  • Read this article someone wrote for Baby Bargains....long but VERY informative!

  • Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?

I just don't know how people used like 6-8 bottles/day and breastfed. We used like 2, and they were 2 ounce bottles so 2 of them was a meal for her. And once she was sleeping longer stretches (5+hours) she didn't regularly even get bottles at all.

If you're planning on breastfeeding I would not consider buying a whole bunch of bottles to be EFF or minimalist, especially since different babies like different nipples so you could have 8 of one thing that LO won't take.

  • Thank you for all the information.  :) I feel much more prepared now.

Mystery2B: I will be formula feeding.

Um, she says in her OP that she is going to EFF (Exclusively Formula Feed).

Once we started EFFing with DS#1, and found a bottle he liked, we had at least 8 ... maybe 10 I think.  But I hate washing bottles, lol, so I made sure I had a bunch on hand.

I use a microwave sterilizer daily (hand wash put in serilizer). It holds 4 bottles, once filled I pop in microwave for 4 minutes.  I put the bottles in the dishwasher 2 or 3 times a week (everytime I run the dishwasher).

Oh, I read EFF as "eco friendly family"  which is another board on here. Oops, sorry.
