How long are you planning to breastfeed?

I am thinking as long as I can (but I don't know how long the avg. time frame is?)? When baby gets teeth though, it will be pumped breastmilk for him lol.

Re: How long are you planning to breastfeed?

  • 9-12 months. I would love to go longer, but I can't cycle with the RE again until I stop BFing. My eggs are certified crap, so I don't want to tempt father time by waiting more than 9-12 months.

  • I am pretty much in the same boat. As long as I can- but once those teeth come in it will be bottle feed breast milk.

  • My goal is a year.  I might pump some beyond that, but I think I'll be really ready to start to get my breasts back by then.

  • Around a year I think, but of course we'll see how things go. It could be less then that, or more. we'll see!

  • I definitely want to breastfeed for at least 1 year, but would do it up to 2 years if the baby wants it.

  • My goal would be a year. Ideally up to 2 if the baby is still interested.  I breastfed DS until 20-21 months.  He had 8 teeth by the time he was 9 months.  It only hurt when he first got the teeth.  The pain was very short lived!!!  Only bit a handful of times.
  • My goal is 6 months, but hopefully I can go longer.

  • My goal is 6 months.  I go back to work at 7 months so I think it will be a good time to wean...I didn't plan to BF past a year max anyway.

  • At least 12 months. DS made it 17 months, with my having to pump at work from 7w to 12 months. It's very important to me.

  • 18 months - 2 years, (unless baby self-weans before, but it's fairly rare before 18 months).
  • Just want to add...teeth truly aren't an issue. If the latch is correct, it's not a big deal. I got nipped twice, but it was because *I* wasn't paying attention when unlatching (and it wasn't that bad...very brief). It really truly is not an issue.
  • My goal is 6 months. I feel like pumping at work is going to be a huge pain for me, it's a small office and the only place that is semi-private is the 2 stall bathroom.......

  • We are going to go a year.  I think that is long enough, plus with having to pump at work, it will be struggle to make it from 6 weeks post birth to a year.

And I don't plan to strickly, literally feed from the breast that time...after 6 weeks not possible, I have to go back to work (and want too), and either way, we are doing this baby thing together, so hubby will be getting up to bottle feed as much as I will.

  • My goal is 6 mos.

This.  I'll go back to work at about 4 months (Mid/Late-October) so I'll just have to play it by ear.   I have no idea how feasible it's going to be for me to pump at work, and if I can't then obviously that will be a problem.  I'm a kindergarten teacher so as long as I can get it done during my 25 min. lunch at 10:45 I should be fine... :- /

  • Honestly 3 months. I did not enjoy it at all last time so am going to try to tough it out at least that long. If we get into a rhythm and it's successful I'll go past that point but I really am not looking forward to it. I at least have the PIS so if I end up getting beat up in the hospital again I can pump. Hospital LC wasn't there Saturday's and there was no hospital pump I could rent once I left (all rented out). So those hoping to "just rent a pump" may want to double check availability.

  • I plan to exclusively pump so I am hoping for a year, maybe more if all works out as planned.  I don't think I will go past 1.5 years though.

  • My goal is a year, longer if I can.  But I know that BFing twins can be really complicated (supply issues, etc.) so I'm going to consider every day of BFing a success.

  • At least one year is my goal, but I'd like to for longer if possible. My mom breastfed me and my sister both until we were about 2 and my sisters have done the same things with their kids. It's important to me, but will be tough, as I'll be going back to work around 8 weeks (unless things change, which I'm praying for).

  • I breastfed DD until 14 months. I plan on breastfeeding kiddo #2 at least a year and then weaning them off slowly after that point.

  • 1 year.  I nursed my first two for a year and sometimes it sucked, but I'm glad I did it.

  • I wanted to do a year with DD but my supply was crap so I had to supplement at 3 weeks. She got 1/2 breast milk and half formula until 6 months and then my supply just went away so I had to formula feed after that. I am going to try again with this baby and see how it goes.

  • My goal is 6 months, but I would like to make it a year. Like MM said though, tiwns can give you all kinds of BFing issues, so I'll be thrilled with whatever I can get!

  • I plan to do it as long as I can, but not past 12 mos. With DS, I worked full time and only made it 7 mos., with DD, I only worked 2 days/week and made it 11 mos. I did have a stash of frozen milk though, so they both probably got the pumped "liquid gold" longer than that.

With the other 2, I also starting feeding them pumped milk from a bottle at least once a day as soon as I could so that they didn't just want me to feed them and they learned to drink from a bottle. That worked well with both. I've had some friends whose LO's would only let mom feed them and would not take a bottle.

  • I am thinking 6 months... but who knows what will happen.

I am impressed with all the 1 year+ posts.

  • The goal is one year. We want to TTC#2 when #1 is a year old. I read it is harder to get pregnant while BFing and getting PG may dry up your milk.

  • I breastfed DD for one year and then slowly started weaning, finally completely stopping around 15 months.  That's my plan with this one as well.  With DD what got me through was setting small goals---2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, 1 year.  I also worked until she was 10 months old and was hooked to the pump for better than an hour a day.  I'd take breastfeeding over pumping ANY DAY!  I honestly am not sure how I got through some of those days so big props to those ladies doing it!

  • I BF DD until she was 14 months.  I would love to do the same with this one, so I'll say AT LEAST 1 year.

  • I plan to BF as long as the baby needs or wants it. I am not opposed to going up to 2 years (or more). My mom said I BF until I was about 2 1/2. Obviously, the actual feedings aren't all that often (nighttime usually), but it's still part of the routine.

  • I am hoping 3-6 months.. I can't imagine myself going for a year or two, good for those ladies but i have a strong feeling i just wont be able to (mentally and with work)

  • I am hoping to BF for atleast a year. I will have to pump and bottle feed after a few months once I return to work full time. I am very thankful to have my own office with a door that shuts completely so I will have my privacy. I also hope to WFH 2-3 days a week, which will make pumping easier. It is going to be tough, but I would really like to use only breast milk and no formula. We will just have to see how it goes.

  • I am hoping 6 months - like another poster, I am going to have to stop in order to prepare my body for fertility treatments for baby #2.  And time is critical for us.  I am no spring chicken!

  • I'm planning to BF/pump for a year.  My short term goal (as in, I refuse to let myself give up barring medical issues) is 8-12 weeks b/c I hear it gets better after that.

ETA: We'll see if reality matches up to what I said above.  I won't beat myself up if it doesn't work out.  :)

  • Still Bfing DS - 16m. Hoping to BF him until he self weans. Then the new LO the same.  Teeth really doesnt have an impact on them feeding. However, if they bit you can teach them not to. If they don't listen or can't learn not to that is another story.

  • I plan on breastfeeing each for 2 years if my supply lasts.

I actually got pregnant on the mini pill. So far my supply has been good, I did start supplementing because it was hard for me to keep up. Not getting enough to eat ect.

  • With DD my goal was 12 months. I went 15 months. I did start supplementing with formula when I wasn't home when she was about 7 months. Pumping at work as a teacher just got to be too much of a PITA. With this one my goal will be the same.
  • I am planning on at least a year and really hope my supply lasts that long!

  • At least a year, I dont know how much longer after that... we'll see when the time comes.

edit- ahh nevermind that.  We don't use birth control or condoms and I'd rather not end up like Michelle Duggar so I'll breastfeed in hopes of delaying my fertility and stop when we get pregnant again

  • I BFed DD for 6 months and for the last month or so I was pumping exclusively and I hate that part of the game. My goal this time is 9mo with occasional pumping but nothing as extensive as it was last time. It took up a lot of extra time that I would have preferred to be doing other things, so I am hoping this kiddo has a good latch and a good appetite!
