My 2 month old just started having green mucusy poops ( no blood) that smell awful. Up until now they were typical seedy mustard.
Could it be: a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance, a milk protein intolernace, or possibly a virus? Here are my thoughts on each....
1. I think a hindmilk/foremilk issue is only for those with an oversupply (right?), which I do not have. Could this still be an issue and causing this green mucus? I started nuirsing on only one side for several feedings straight (per Kellymom) to see if that would help and give him more hindmilk.
2. Milk protein issue? Can this all of the sudden develop? I had dairy the first 10 weeks or so of his life with no issues. I dont eat much dairy to begin with, but right around the time the green mucus poop started, I had a small increase in dairy, but nothing extreme. So, starting today I have eliminated all dairy to see if this helps.
3. A virus or stomach bug? He has no fever and isnt cranky or extra sleepy. So I don?t think this could be it.
Not sure how I will know when this does resolve itself if it is because of the elimination of milk from my diet or was it because he wasn?t getting hindmilk enough.
Anyone else have this issue? Have I missed any possible causes?
Also?he is drooling like crazy which I read teething and all the extra saliva swallowed can cause stomach issues. But he is only 2 months, no where near teeth yet, but still has all this drool in the past week starting. Could this be the culprit and not the others above?
Re: Green Mucus stool: hindmilk? Milk in my diet? virus? Drooling?
For me I had foremilk/hindmilk issues after the 6 week growth spurt. He was eating very frequently until I sorted it out. He usually ate every 2 hours, during the growth spurt it was literally almost 24 hours straight (not a fun day!) and afterwards still every 1.5 hours. Now he's at 3 hours during the day, pedi is happy, I'm happy, LO is happy. Anyway, I didn't notice that I had an oversupply issue until I started nursing only on one side as you mentioned. That's when I was very engorged and it took about a week for everything to even out for my supply and LO. He had a lot of other symptoms too, before the green poop. I was actually convinced it was awful reflux and read on a different site to try nursing only on one side as babies with reflux want to nurse frequently which can lead to imbalance and oversupply. He was gassy, spitting up after every feeding sometimes quite profusely, slept awful, sour smelling throw up. But fixing my milk balance saw immediate results in LO. It took a few days for it to completely get better but by the end of the first day things were better. By the end of the second day I was convinced that was the problem all along. The green poop remained for about a week, though not in every diaper.
The LLLI site explains having a milk protein allergy is rare, so I'd try testing the balance issue a little longer. Either way, try only one option at a time to be sure.
