Re: Speaking of accounts: poll

  • We have 2 joint accounts.

  • I voted for "2 separate, 1 joint" because to simplify it, we each have our own money but then share some joint money.

However, it's in several different accounts - I have my own checking and my own savings and a retirement account, Brian has the same, and we have joint checking, savings, and of course retirement accounts.

But it's definitely a "mine, his and ours" situation.

  • We actually have 4 separate and a joint.  We each have our own checking/savings and then a joint savings account...but it's all "our" money.  My husband is very type A and it would drive him crazy the way I manage money so we each have our bills and we have a budget but the separate accounts allow us to bank the way we're each comfortable.

  • I guess I should clarify too. Our 401Ks are separate, as are our Roth IRAs. We each have our own everyday credit card, both Dividends through Citibank. They are different acct numbers, but are paid each month out of our joint checking/savings. I categorize my transactions from my card in Mint; he does his. This way, we can still buy each other things secretly if we use our credit cards.

However, everything is an "ours" situation because it comes from the same big pool.

It's funny you say this - when we just purchased our mattress, we used money we got from our parents for Christmas and then spent what we would have spend on each other towards it.

At the end of the day, Brian put it all on his credit card (rewards points), and then I wrote him a check from my personal account. I felt so goofy writing him a check because even though we keep separate accounts, it's all from the same big pool and all is part of our family resources.

Yeah, that would feel goofy to me too!

  • Right now we have 4 joint accounts--3 checking and 1 savings.  DH is at a credit union here, then he opened a BB&T acct over the summer when he was in Louisville so that he could make deposits.  I bank at BB&T too.  But, we're going to close out one of the BB&T accounts and just stick with two.
  • We have a joint savings and checking at two different banks.  Kinda weird and we have planned on closing the accounts at one of the banks, but haven't done it yet.
