Maybe some different insight on this board...

The other day I made a post on 1st Tri about having bought some yoga blocks that contained the "This product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm." And I was not pleased, to say the least, as I had never seen one of these before.

Everyone just told me, 'everything in California says that -- don't worry about it.' One person said she had just used nail polish with the same warning -- it should be fine so long as you don't huff it. Well, I won't use nail polish period.

So these things didn't really make me feel any better. I looked up some stuff on Prop 65 and I understand it a little better now but still think it sounds pretty sketchy. I understand how some people can brush these off, because it sounds like a lot of companies will list these warnings "just in case" to cover themselves instead of checking every chemical in their products. But I'm sure a ton of them are legitimate warnings. How do you know?

Does anyone have insight into any of this? Because I'm still opposed to touching those yoga blocks, haha.

I think I would be a complete basketcase if I lived in California. Maybe I'm just super extra paranoid about these things.

  • I'm with you on it, I wouldn't want to touch them.  That said the US will let a lot of chemicals into the country and products that are sold here, that the UK  will not because they are know to be harmful.

  • My DH & I have a joke that everything causes cancer in CA.

That said - can you cover them?  If you're nervous, I'd go ahead and return them, but to be honest, unless your licking/ingesting/breathing in the fumes for extended periods of time, I don't know that I'd be overly nervous about them.

  • The foam smell of them is really, really strong so that makes me nervous about the fumes it could be giving off. Yeah. I don't know yet. They're currently tied up inside several bags, hah.
  • It would make me nervous as well, especially if they smell that horrible.  If you do decide to keep them, I would let them air out in your garage or somewhere.  As a consumer, I think it's wise to look into what chemicals are used and if you're comfortable having them in your home.  If  you can't find the information on the product or website, I would call the manufacturer.

  • It would make me nervous, too, especially since you're pregnant. I would probably return them since if you're worried, you're less likely to use them. I bought a bag of travel-size toiletry bottles last week to take on a plane and I was totally horrified when I saw that same label on them when i got home. Won't be using those again.!
