Cloth Diapering

Does anyone use only prefolds?

I've got a bunch of prefolds (I bought big before I discovered Kawaii pockets) and don't know if i should just sell them off to someone or keep them & try and use them in the mix when the baby comes.   I've got 2dz newborn. 3 dz infant 3dz premium & econobum/bummis/pro covers.   I plan to use the newborn until the baby will fit into my BG and Kawaii, but past that, was thinking of just using the rest for burp rags and changing mats.

Anyone with extensive experience willing to hold my hand through this confusing process of cloth diapering (which I am thinking I am making more confusing than necessary) Huh?

If the house ain't burned down and the baby's fed it was a successful day. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: Does anyone use only prefolds?

  • you certainly can use prefolds only, but most people don't because we all have "minor"-ok BIG- addictions.

If you decide to try and only use PF you will probably want to get some fleece liners (just get it from the fabric store and cut it up) so LO will have the stay dry feel.

You will also probably want to get something eventually for night time since the PF will probably not be enough once you LO is STTN.

Also check out the FAQ at the top of the board, it is very helpful. GL

  • I used only prefolds for daytime until 6 months.  Then I needed more absorbency and got tired of fighting to get her into them and snappi them down.

What I love about prefolds is the ease of them.  No inserts, they dry really easy, no prep beyond folding, and they are all cotton.  It's likely I will go back to them at some point in the future.

  • We used them almost exclusivly for four months but then the pockets took over.  I now have tons of diapers and could go over a week without using the same one (although I would have to wash or they would smell)  The other thing was that I had 36 infant prefolds and that was a good number for me to wash every other day he could poo a lot back then

  • I have some GMD prefolds in every size (most I got as seconds, so really cheap) and they make up about 1/3 of our stash of what we use on a daily basis. We just trifold them in a cover so it's just as easy as putting on a pocket IMO. Also, I love having them as back ups and for other purposes around the house. That said though, I think I'll be getting rid of my brown edges (largest ones) because DD will never be big enough to fit in them.

  • My LO is 18mo and we only use prefolds. I do have 2 AIO that the ladies in the church nursery use for him on Sundays but any other time he is in prefolds and thirsties covers. I LOVE them. At night we use 2 prefolds, a fleece liner/ doubler, and a cheap gerber cover. He sleeps 12+ hours and never leaks. He was over a year old when we started CDing so I'm not sure how much help I can be to you but if you have any questions for me ask away.

I was gonna say, you could probably use them instead of the microfiber inserts that a lot of ladies don't like to keep anyway (because of stink issues and the way they feel).

Can you use prefolds as soakers for fitteds or aios? Or is that too much bulk?

I think the larger ones would be too much bulk, but maybe the newborn and next size up prefolds tri-folded and stuffed into an AIO would be fine. However, I don't use prefolds, so I don't know from experience or anything. I just know that the prefolds I got to try out on my DD, I just recently turned into embellished burp cloths and they would be awfully bulky added into her fitted diapers or stuffed into a BG or FB.

  • We use PF almost exclusively and have since birth with our 17 month old.  We do use fitteds with a few doublers at night and a wool cover and I do have some pockets for outings.  But...I prefer PF's because they're ultra easy to wash, fold, store and personally, I think the snappi is easier to use than the snaps on our pockets.

Also, in a pinch I have used two prefolds trifolded as a nighttime dipe in a pocket and DS did wonderful.  :)

I am currently experimenting with a Bellabottoms fitted and HH hemp doubler w/ wool cover for tonight.  It's much trimmer than what LO usually wears and I want to see if the absorbancy is the same.

  • I love prefolds.  I used them exclusively on DD1 until she was about 3 months old, and then in rotation with a few pockets until she started solids.  (I find it more difficult to scrape poo off prefolds than off synthetic fabrics, so that is why we made the switch then).

I stopped using them on DD2 earlier - about 2 months - because she really hates feeling wet.  But I was sad to stop using them.  I think they are cute, love using them with Thirsties covers, and I love that they are really easy to get thoroughly clean.  I have had various stink issues with pockets over the last few months, but never any problems with prefolds.

I would definitely give them a try.  You might love them.
