Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6 week old not sleeping!

My little girl quit sleeping during the day.  She might take a few cat naps (like 5-10 minutes), but that's it.  Before she use to sleep all the time.  i know they get more alert but I can't get anything done ha ha

It's not like she crashes and sleeps all night.  She still gets up every 2-4 hours at night.

But the other day she was up from 7-4pm with like 2 cat naps.  Same yesterday and today.  You think she's tired, but she tricks you.

Is this normal....anyone else experiencing this?

Re: 6 week old not sleeping!

  • Babies at her age only sleep an average of 14 hours a day. She also might be having a growth spurt; is she hungrier then usual?

  • No she's not hungrier than usual and she's content for a short period of time...fusses then she's content...fusses etc.

  • I think she's probably not getting enough sleep...she should only be awake for 1 - 1 1/2 hours before napping again. Did you try having her sleep in a swing, sling, bouncer, swaddled, etc.?

I disagree with this statement. Ideally, 6 weeks olds should be napping after 60-80 minutes of awake time (see siggy for awake time guidlines), and naps should be about 2-3 hrs, so I'd guess it's more like an average of 16-18 hrs a day.

My 1 year old sleeps 14 hrs a day (12 over night, and 2 in naps).

My 7 week old sleeps 11 hrs overnight (with one feeding = 40 minutes in the middle of that), and then naps every 70 minutes of awake time in the day.

100% this!!!!!! Sounds like she's overtired. Again, read my siggy links.

  • my LO is 6 weeks as well and we just went through the same thing!  I was scared I would never get to sleep again!!  :)  She ended up just being overly tired, and has been catching up on sleep since! ...and so have we!  :)
  • My LO did this right around 6 weeks or so. It lasted about a week and it seemed to be right after his 6 week growth spurt.

I think he was getting over tired, he eventually went back to sleeping more. I was just having a really hard time with confusing his sleepy cues with his hunger cues.

It will get better : )

  • My LO did this at 6 weeks too. She was getting overtired and didn't know how to get back to sleep. Now after an hour or so I swaddle her and walk with her until she falls asleep or put her in her sling and walk.
  • Mine has given up afternoon naps. She's in a good mood and does well sleeping at night.  I try to put her down but she's not having it.
