Constant headaches since giving birth 2.5 weeks ago

I have been dealing with headaches every day since about 4/5 days post partum.

Everything I've read said it could be hormonal or epidural related. I thought epi headaches started in the hospital or shortly after getting the epidural though. I'm going to call my OB tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone else experienced something similar or if any of you have any thoughts as to what is causing this?

The strain on my neck and shoulders from the headaches is killing me! This is my third baby and my other children are 4 and almost 20 months and it sucks trying to care for all of them when I feel so wretched. Oh, and pain relievers don't seem to help at all.

  • My first thought was hormones. What kind of painkillers are you taking? When I get migraines I take 800 mg of ibuprofen and I'd that doesn't do it I hit the vicodin. Definitely talk to your doctor. I hope you can find some relief soon!

  • Not to scare you but that exact thing happened to my cousin after having her second baby. She had a non-stop headache for eleven days after giving birth until it finally got so bad she went to the er. She ended up having a stroke while in the er. The headache was all due to her blood pressure and she had no issues with it while pregnant. Definitely get it checked out asap.

  • Lurker here, but I wanted to chime in on the epi headaches. I had one with my 2nd and it was awful. It did start in the hospital, and rather than having it fixed (thru what's called a blood patch- they inject a vial of your blood back in the epi site to seal it.) I went home and dealt with it for a week before getting the patch....ugh!

I couldn't lay down or sit out without horrible pain, and forget sleeping!

I really hope you feel better soon, definitely get it checked out! GL!

This.   I would check your BP tonight.

  • I was going to suggest checking your b/p.  preeclampsia can develop post partum, usually in the first 2 weeks post partum.  I had pree twice... with my first, it did worsen over the 2 wks postpartum and I had high b/p for  6 wks post partum.  first 2 wks... headaches and nose bleeds and I was on labetolol.  it was awful.

check your b/p, go to your ob.  may be migraines related to the hormone shift. you may be dehydrated.  may be from lack of good rest.  call your ob.

  • As the others have said, I suggest checking your BP. Pre-E can develop PP. Good luck!
