My LO is getting his shots this coming Friday and I had heard that you are supposed to give him infant tylenol, well today we went to Target and there was no infant Tylenol on the shelf anywhere and someone told me it had been pulled. The Up & Up Brand of the Infant Tylenol said it was for 2-3 years old so I bought the Up & Up Infant Ibuprofen which says for 6-23 months (LO is 2 months old) will this work just the same or should I try and find something different? If so do I give it to him before the shots or after?
Re: Infant Tylenol
Generally pediatricians say you cannot give ibuprofen until 6 months. Did you pediatrician tell you to give him tylenol? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. Most pedis do not recommend giving tylenol unless your LO develops a fever after the shots.
If they want him to have tylenol, they will give it to him at the appt.
Infant Tylenol is acetaminophen, which is safe for the little ones. Your doc will tell you the dose based on your kid's weight at the appointment. Ibuprofen isn't recommended before six months. Ask a pharmacist for the off-brand infant acetaminophen if they don't have Tylenol (we ended up with Nortemp Concentrated Infants' Drops).
Ask your pedi about when and if you should give it. We were advised to give it after if he was in pain or running a temp. Some moms on here are told not to give it before because it can hamper the vaccines' effects.
Many stores no longer stock infant Tylenol after last years recall. Instead, most stores now carry their own brand of acetomeniphine (which is Tylenol).
We use the Up and UP Intant Acetomeniphine (sp?), which states it is for 2-3 year olds. This is the same as infant Tylenol (per our pedi). We just give the smallest dose. Your drs. office will also carry some, so you can ask them to give LO a dose after their shots if you want.
There is a study, though, that shows giving infants tylenol after their vaccines lowers the effectivness of the vaccine. So you might also want to ask your pedi about that. DS had tylenol shortly before his vaccines for his first year, then our pedi gave us a bunch of research papers and said to make up our own minds. DS hasn't had any afterwards and neither has DD. But that is our choice, and not for everyone. https://abcnews.go.com/Health/SwineFlu/tylenol-shots-hurt-vaccines-effectiveness/story?id=8840239

This.
Also, I know some people give it prior to the appointment but our doctor recommended we wait until after wards.
