Parenting after a Loss

Giving baby #2, DD's nursery furniture. WDYT???

So I was all about DD keeping her furniture for a long time as we got her the convertible crib that turns into a toddler bed and then a full bed.

Well... Now that DS is on his way, we are thinking about giving him our daughter's set and buying DD a new "girl" set. If I was to buy DS a crib, etc, I would lean towards something exactly like what we already have for DD.

This is the link to the set we have for DD.

It's the expresso color all the way at the bottom of the page.

Do you think we should give DS the furniture set we already have and then get DD a set that she will have for a long time?

  • That's what we're doing when we have #2. I've already got and antique set of furniture witha full size bed, we're painting it black and that's what Jax will have when he gets big enough and we need the big crib for the new baby.

  • Seems kinda silly to have 2 cribs - even if both are convertible. I would probably just buy DD a big girl bed and side rails.

This is probably what we are going to do! Heading out today to look at furniture!

    Thanks ladies!

  • We had the same plan you did, but I think we've changed our mind and are just going to get a small toddler bed (or my handy DH will make one) for Kaygan to use.

I think it's really going to depend on how DD#1 is on staying in bed etc by the time we want to start using the crib for DD#2. #2  will be in a PNP in our room till she learns to STTN or is 6 months old, whichever comes second, then they'll be sharing a bedroom. If Kaygan will stay in a bed by that point, she'll get a big girl bed, if not, well, I guess we'll figure that out when we get there!

I don't think we'll get any of our kids a really nice 'forever set' until they are a bit older, like Jr. High. They'll just get simple twin beds or something till then.

  • Maybe it's just my kids, but they are extremely rough on their furniture.  When we had DS1 we bought a beautiful crib, dresser, and armoire.  DD was a surprise - DS1 was just 11 months old when she was born, but instead of buying another crib, we put him in a toddler bed.

Our crib was recalled, so we ended up buying a new one for DS2, but the dresser has been used for all 3 and it looks like it's been through a war, as did the old crib.  They gnawed on it while teething (they learned to take the rail covers off), they've scratched it with toys, by climbing, etc.   Honestly, I won't buy them a nice set of furniture until they're a bit older - like 5 or 6.  They have some adorable (and cheap!) furniture for IKEA and they love it.
