intro and question about second hand maternity clothes

Hi all!

I have lurked for a bit and see some names I recognize from TN and TK. So.. .hello again!

I am looking for places to start searching for maternity clothes. (I don't need them now, but am guessing I might not feel like looking when I do!) Do you have any second hand shops that are clean and would recommend?

Thanks for any insight!

Re: intro and question about second hand maternity clothes

  • I guess I should have actually included an intro.... Indifferent

DH and I got married in Alexandria in 2008. Live in Fairfax and just found out we are due in October! YAY!

We are hopeful and enjoying all that goes with our first pregnancy. I am high risk due to type 1 diabetes, so we are trying to stay worry free Big Smile

  • I got my maternity clothes at a hodge podge of places. I happened to find a woman on Craigslist that was the same weight/height as me pre-pregnancy so I bought 20 articles of clothing from her. That's a good way to do it if you can find someone your size selling a bunch of stuff. I also found a few odds and ends at The Growing Years in Kensington but that might be a drive for you. Other than that I shopped clearance racks at Target and Kohls and also shopped at Old Navy as well.

Congrats and H&H 9 months to you!

  • I had hand-me-downs from friends, bought some stuff new at Motherhood Maternity, and 2nd time around, got a bunch of stuff off Craigslist. Maternity clothes get worn for only a few short months so why not save some $$ and buy 2nd hand.

  • thanks! I hadn't thought to look at Craigslist.

I posted on freecycle, but it is so hit or miss. I will try more throughout!

  • freecycle is also great; keep your eyes open, you have a few weeks

do you have any friends your size who had babies? ask them if they still have their maternity clothes, you can borrow or take them off their hands.

I do, just not local. which may or not be a big deal. Huh?

I will definitely ask, though! I really appreciate your help!

  • old navy online was where I got the most and kohls online because I was working and needed work clothes.  I also found someone on craiglist with a similar body type and size and bought 2 trashbags full of stuff from her for like 25 bucks.. I didn't like it all and it all didn't fit, but I probably ended up with at least 30 things that I did like and for that price it was great...

    congrats and good luck!!

  • I bought a lot from the gap and old navy.  The old navy in skyline - very close to you - actually has maternity in the store.
  • Kid to Kid in Centreville -  I have gotten so much stuff from there! It's a children's consignment store but they do have a maternity section in the back. Good luck and congratulations!

  • I was actually able to wear a lot of stuff from regular stores for a long time, since there were so many flowy empire waist shirts out while I was preg!

Also, check out the Motherhood Maternity outlet, and the "Outlet" section of the JCPenney websit.  you can get some crazy deals on sale stuff.

    Congrats!

(P.S. - were you the Nestie that used to have a pic of you playing Wii in a wedding dress?)

  • It might be a bit of a drive but if you happen to be in the Rockville area some time, Boomerangs on Shady Grove Road is a consignment store that has maternity. Also emma's closet in Germantown (not too far from Great Beginnings!) Good luck!

  • Hey - good to "see" you - I personally liked the dragon boat siggy the best. H&H 9 months!

I liked Wiggle Room in Bethesda and got a lot of things on sale at Kohl's.

  • Congrats to you!

In addition to PP suggestions - I found secondhand clothes (in addition to everything else) at consignment sales, ie Dani's Duds, Kid's Closet, Classy Kid's, etc.

  • Kid to Kid in Centreville is the closest consignment shop I know if, if you are in FFX. They have maternity. Many of my maternity clothes were from yard sales. The beginning of yard sale season might actually line up well for you. Clothes will fit SO differently that I would be cautious about loading up now. Of the things I bought before I needed them, only 1 actually looked attractive once I was actually showing.  Also, for me, at least, by the third trimester I really needed different things than 2nd tri. Consignment sales also are awesome, but I am not sure when the season for those gears up again. There were loads in the fall.
