Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Taking toddlers to movies

Does anyone here take LO to the movies?  I've seen people do it, but I'm concerned it would be too much for DD's eyes and ears.  Thoughts?

Re: Taking toddlers to movies

  • There's a theatre here that does a Baby Day screening.  Every screening before 2pm on Tuesday is baby friendly.  Lower volumes, and crying babies/ toddlers are fine to stay in the room.

  • My DD doesn't sit still for 1 minute, let alone an entire movie. If I put on Yo Gabba Gabba, that might catch her attention for 2 minutes tops. I guess it would depend on your child.

this is what i was going to say! literally, he has no interest at all in anything on tv. if there's a puppy or something, it gets maybe 5-10 seconds lol. i'm amazed at how some of my friend's kids sit still for so long!

  • I would only do one of the baby-friendly ones. Unfortunately they don't have them around here anywhere. DD would definitely not sit through a regular one anyway. She is starting to recognize a couple of shows (Dora and Diego mostly) but she only watches them for a few minutes.

  • I have taken DS to movies since he was 3 months old. Its fun! DS sits and eats his snacks while he watches. I try not to take him to scary movies though

  • My DD has been to three or four. We went to most at the "Mommy matinee" which is for mom's/nannies/daddies/grandparents to bring their baby or toddler and still enjoy a movie and not worry if they cry. I did take her with three other lil ones to a regular theater once and we saw the Babies documentary. Was fun.

  • Are you talking about a kid's movie or an adult movie?

We just took DS #1 to a movie (a kid's movie) and he's almost 3.  Everyone thought I was crazy.  Most people I know would not bring their toddler to a movie.  They just won't sit still.  There was no way I could of with my son until very recently.  I also made sure we went to a weekday late morning showing so it would all be young children.  I knew he would do fine because he'll sit for movies at home and I knew he'd be fascinated by the theater.  He got antsy a few times, but did great and we stayed for the whole movie.

The dark and noise would be too much for really young toddlers, I think.  I even had to prepare DS by showing him pictures of theaters and watching some you tube videos and explaining it would be dark.  Young toddlers don't have the verbal capacity to explain any of that ahead of time.

I definitely would not take any child to an adult movie.  That's not fair to everyone else paying to see a movie without disruptions.

  • I would not take DD to a movie at a theater unless it was a mommy matinee.  The movie theater here does not have them until summer.  I would never try an adult movie at this age with DD.  She would never sit still and it would not be fair to the other patrons.

  • I could never take mine. That wouldnt be fun. It's so expensive too. Not worth it
  • We took DD to one movie because my friend really wanted to go, I was kind of unsure about it but she did great.  It was a kids movie played during the day and we sat in the wheelchair section since no one else was there and that way I had her umbrella stroller right next to my chair (she sat in my lap most of the time though).  She didn't really fuss but her attention wasn't totally into it the whole time so I made sure to have plenty of snacks : )  Not something I would do on a regular basis yet because it gives me anxiety lol.

  • I am seriously shocked that people bring toddlers to movies!  My DS doesn't last more than 10 minutes in a restaurant, and that's 10 minutes of bad behavior, I can't even imagine sitting in a movie theater for an hour or two with a toddler!
