Should I use this name for a Boy??

My Husband and I have always loved the name Payton for a boy but I have got so many mixed reactions to it I'm not sure what to do???
My mom said it isn't much of a boys name anymore and now it's more for a girl???? My husband doesn't like it for a girls name though???
Do you think our son would hate us if we named him Payton???

  • I think if you like the name you should go with it! I do know a little girl named Payton but I also know a little boy named Shannon. So as far as the gender of a name I think is pretty much out the window.

  • tbh I think of a Boy when I hear Payton... I would go with it...

  • I really like the name Payton (or Peyton).  Only Peyton's I know are boys...a cousin and Peyton Manning.

  • It seems more popular for a girl, but I've definitely heard it used as a boy's name. I like it! And I think that if you like it, you should use it! :)

  • Personally, I love it for a boy! Big Smile GO FOR IT!
  • There are LOTS of little guys in my area named Peyton. Being that I'm in TN and Peyton Manning went to UT, it became pretty popular. I know a few girls that are named Peyton but the vast majority are boys. I think it's really cute and works either way.

  • It seems more common for a girl in my area, but I always think "boy" when I hear it.
  • I think with the "e" it's more boyish than with the "a" but I love the name

We considered Peyton for a boy. The middle name we really liked with it was Elijah. We laughed when we put it together because of the Manning brothers....We went great, might as well throw in a second middle name of manning....

  • I've heard it for both boys and girls, so I guess it's becoming more gender neutral. I associate it more with boys but that's just me. It's funny how sometimes names that are traditionally one gender eventually become for both, and I think that's what's happening with Peyton, also with Ryan and Emerson I guess.

If you're comfortable with giving your baby a gender neutral name then go for it! I like names that are specific to genders, but that's just me, and there's a reason there are millions of names out there, so just do what you're comfortable with.

  • Peyton is a boys name.  You should feel free to use it for a boy.  I think it's a great name.

I think boy names can be cute for girls, but it really annoys me that the trend has caused people to say those names are no longer suitable for boys!  Bullsh!t

  • Thank you so much for all your opinions and advice!!!!!!!!
I just needed to hear some positive feedback! We will be going with Payton for our little boy!

  • It's NMS, but if you like it, I would use it and spell it Peyton.  That is more boyish to me because of the Peyton Manning connection.
  • I know several girls AND boys named Payton... I think it's unisex, just may be a little more popular as a girl's name for right now... I say go for it! It's cute!
  • My husband wants this exact name for our little boy. It is a unisex name, so I think you can get away with it, but it seems like it is slowly becoming primarily a girl's name. This is my primary reason for not liking it - I realize it is also a boy's name, but I immediately think "girl" when I hear it. It's just NMS.

It's not a bad name though. I would go ahead with it if you both like it!

  • I grew up with a boy Payton and a girl Peyton. No body every said anything about either of them! I like the name for both a boy or a girl.

    Good Luck.

  • My niece is a Payton - but she would hae been a Payton had she been a boy, too,. She was named for football great Walter Payton. I like it for either.
