NSAIF: Crafty gals

I have this great rug for DD's big girl bed.  We are painting the walls a neutral this weekend and I think once I get the bed in and the rug, I'll be able to make a decision.  I want to do the comforter in a solid color and make accent pillows that "match" the colors in the rug in fun shapes.

I understand how to "make the pillow" except for the end part.  How do you "sew up" the end so that it looks like the rest of the pillow.  Sadly, I have a sewing machine, but I haven't used it in years, so I can't remember/figure it out.

Any ideas on how to make the pillow cases removable so that I can easily wash them?  I don't want to do buttons, as I am not confident in my sewing and I don't want them to pop off and DD eat them.

This is the rug:

I want to make a few circles to look like the "flowers" and make the orange flower with red scalloped trim.  I might even get wild and try the tulip.

.  Any thoughts?

TIA

  • I have always just left a small hole for stuffing and then hand stitched it closed.  Not sure if that is the recommended way though :)

Basically this link is showing you how to make it so that the back has the opening.  No buttons/zippers, etc.

If you are doing a circle, just make the front the full circle shape and the back is going to be made up of two pieces that overlap and you put the pillow in the opening.

I think it sounds like a great idea!  and I love that rug.  You could use felt or fleece for the flowers' embellishments so you don't have to worry about finishing the edges.

Let me know if you are still confused.

  • ditto Mousegail. Just leave enough space to fill it with stuffing (or pillow), and then hand-sew.

  • ditto what dundas said

also - I'd buy the actual pillow, they have cheap pillow forms at joann's or other fabric stores.  One extra step you don't need to do!

Great point!  I find it is actually cheaper to buy the pillow forms than buying the bags of polyfil sometimes!
