Nanny - end of year bonus/gift?

What do you do? Monetary bonus (and if so, how much - in % terms, not $), gift, both? If she will only have been working for us a couple months, is it appropriate to prorate what an annual bonus would be (that's what my employer does)? So if she's been with us 2 months, 2/12 = 1/6 of what a typical annual bonus would be?

Re: Nanny - end of year bonus/gift?

  • Our nanny last year only worked for us 2 days a week and had been with us for 5 months.  We gave her an extra weeks pay for a Christmas gift (in addition to paying her for the week of Christmas when she didn't have to work).

Not sure if that was the right thing to do, but she seemed happy!

  • I give her a weeks pay and a small gift from DD (maybe something she made or picture).

Not sure what I would do if she were only with us a short time..hmmm. Guess I would prorate it..

  • oh yeah and we pay for the week of Christmas too ..
  • When I was a private tutor, the family (same family for 4 yrs) would always do 1 weeks pay, plus a nice gift - longchamp bag, nice wallet, nordstroms gc...

I think for my first year (3mo in at the holidays) they might have just done something like bath and body, but I can't remember exactly.

ETA: I think they went over and above and had the means to do so. I don't think that type of gesture is necessary, especially not in the first few months. One weeks pay is more than generous!

  • While not expected, it was always appreciated! I would usually get  a week's pay as a bonus, and then paid as we had agreed on off weeks for the holiday. Some families did not pay when I was not there, and some did.  Aside from the bonus, I would usually get a small nice gift like bath and body stuff, one year a gas GC ect.

It is nice for you to think of her like that. I have not ever heard of getting a certain percentage, but have heard often of nannies getting the equivalent of a week's pay.

  • Thanks, all. Since she'll only have been full time for a month, a week's pay at her regular salary seems steep to me, so I will probably do a half week's pay (equivalent to one week pay of her part time hours which she did the first month). Plus a small gift from the kids. She is salaried, not hourly, so she already gets paid for Christmas, any other holidays, etc. I appreciate the input!

  • Our nannies are PT - we have one for the boys and one for the baby (since their needs are so different right now).  We give a week's pay and a nice gift.  However, we do not pay for days that they are not working - most of the time the holiday actually falls on one of their "off" days anyway.

  • We always did 2 weeks pay as our nanny's end of year bonus (this was standard in our area...high COL with a lot of nannies).  We did also get her a little something -- more of a token gift (think a candle) so our daughter could give it to her with a little card she decorated herself for our nanny (she loved our nanny).  Our nanny pretty much always worked a full year (started with us in Feb the first year she worked with us) so I never had to deal with the 2nd part of your question personally but, yes, I would pro-rate it somehow -- especially if she's only been with you a couple of months.
