Today is an especially sad day for DH. While most people remember this day as the anniversary of the Challenger Explosion, DH remembers it as the day his oldest son was stillborn. He and his first wife went to what was supposed to be her last appt. before her due date. The doctor was in a very small, rural area. The doc. told DH to get his ex in the car and drive her as fast as possible to a large city hospital an hour away. He said there wasn't time to get an ambulance there and he had to hurry. They had no idea what was happening.
The doc. called ahead to the hospital so they were waiting for them. They delivered their son stillborn. At some time probably during the day before, the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. DH's ex hadn't noticed the decrease in movement. It was devastating for them and the stress and grief ultimately lead to their divorce a few years later.
DH remembers that the nurses kept talking to them about the Challenger explosion like he and his wife would even care about it. DH finally had enough and told them he didn't give a fvck about that. He was trying to make funeral arrangements for his son.
There really isn't a point to this post, I guess only to remember Nicholas, DH's first son.
