You know that Seinfeld episode....

The one where Elaine tries to switch doctors? They all keep calling her high maintenance and she ends up seeing a vet or something at the end? Help me avoid that!

Since the beginning, I haven?t loved our pediatrician. It isn?t a good fit. I do have a lot of questions, but I don?t feel like I?m an idiot: I do a lot of reading.  I feel like my doctor thinks I ask too many questions, and well he might think I?m an idiot.  At one time during a check-up he pointed out the lines where the elastic had been on LO and said, now these are just from his clothes. SERIOUSLY?

So we?re seeing a new pediatrician on Thursday. I want to share with her why we?re looking for a new doc: we want to be able to ask questions, I want to work with someone who supports our parenting choices, but I don?t want her to hear that we don?t like our current pediatrician and label us as worriers or a problem or something, you know? So, how do I share where we?re coming from without immediately creating defensiveness in the doc? TIA!!

  • I'm a question-asker, too, and I don't necessarily think I'd alert the new doctor that I want to be able to ask questions. Parents are supposed to ask.  How on earth should we know whether a rash is dangerous or not, if 14 days of a runny nose is OK or not...? My mom is a doctor and she said that as long as the patient lets her get through her mental checklist so she doesn't get thrown off and forget to do something, then she welcomes questions.  That's why there's always such a long wait at the doctor's office, because other patients are in there chatting up the doctor.

I think changing doctors is a great idea but I don't think you need to tell the new doctor why.  You're obviously looking for a new pedi because the old one was a bad fit. 'nuff said.

  • I don't think you need to give a reason. You need a new doc, simple as that. Once you're dealing with her, you can see how she reacts to your questions. Pedis should listen, not act as though you're dumb.
