How to offer uncooked fruits/veg. when LO has no teeth?

Well, I shouldn't say "no" teeth.  He has one on the bottom that's about half way through and one on top that's just started.

Even still, he can't chew with his teeth.  I know he can gum food but I'm afraid of him choking so I'd like to know how you offer uncooked fruits/veggies.  For example, if I want to give him a peach... should I do "slices" or "chunks"?

I'm wondering the size.  Also looking for ideas on things to offer that are easy for a 13 month old to self-feed.

Thanks!

  • With very few teeth, we just did very very small chunks. Now that DS is used to that, we're slowly getting into bigger pieces as he's more familiar with chewing (even though he doesn't have molars yet). It's just about starting really small and then slowly working up.

As for ideas on food, one of DS favorites is grapes- I started by cutting each into quarters to make sure he could handle it. Oranges were also a huge hit at our house- just cut up nice and small.

  • DD also has only 1 lower bottom tooth and with all fruit I let her have whatever and maybe put it into smaller pieces dependings on the fruit.  Vegetables I either cut them thin so her tooth can cut thru it or I might heat it up a little so that it softens.

  • We did BLWing with Lily. She's eaten everything since before she had teeth. I would say to start with, nothing bigger than your thumbnail and you may want to steam harder foods (apples, asparagus, etc) so it's softer. Also, there is a difference between gagging and choking. Gagging is a normal process for a baby learning to self feed and it's important for mom not to freak out. Smile Choking, obviously, is a different story. Make sure you know the difference!
This is a test. This is only a test.
  • When DS only had a few teeth I would often boil or steam veggies to soften them.  He liked green beans and carrots like that.  As for fruit, I would cut grapes and blueberries in half and dice up peaches, pears, melons and bananas into small cubes.  I still haven't done any really hard fruits like apples or unripe pears because he doesn't have molars yet.
  • We do banana slices cut in quarters and clementine orange sections cut up. I don't give him the "ends" of the orange sections since they are mostly skin. I also steam baby carrots ahead of time and just do a little warm up on those from a container in the fridge. Nate is also fond of pickles. I just cut the pickels into about a french fry size without the skin and he gums away.

  • Before you serve him something, try "chewing" it with only your tongue.  That gives you an idea of how your baby will be able to handle it, and how easily he can mash it with his gums.

Ripe pear, watermelon, banana, avocado, cut-up strawberries.  Most veggies need a little cooking first.

  • Small chunks that they can gum. No hard fruits and veggies (I love cooked frozen mixed veggies).
