cradle cap gone bad

I posted the other day that my baby's cradle cap was really bad and asked for suggestions of what to do.  I also mentioned that it was kind of wet.  Well I called his doctor the other day and they said to put baby oil on it then shampoo and then use a soft brush.  I did that, and the wetness got 10 times worse.  The scaley stuff came off but now his head is just wet.  It doesn't seem to be bothering him, but I feel so bad.  I will call right away this morning and see if they can see him, because I don't think cradle cap is supposed to be like this.  My mom watched him lastnight and she kind of thought it looked like a water blister to her.  I put him in a hat when he fell asleep and when he woke up it was soaked and there was a huge spot on the sheet.  Can anyone relate?

Re: cradle cap gone bad

  • that does sound odd- #1 had cradle cap & it was more flaky than anything. there was the yellow crusty stuff that would ooze a bit (gag) but not enough to get anything wet.

my pedi suggested Selson Blue 2-3x per week. put it on- scrub it in & let it sit for a bit- then rinse well.

comb & brush out the flakes as best you can.

but with the amount of wet you're experiencing, i'd call the pedi just to be sure!

  • That doesn't sound right at all. I'm betting it wasn't just plain cradle cap, or at least a very extreme case of it. Hopefully he's okay. Keep us updated... I'm curious to see what it actually is.

It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of ANNABEL LEE; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker image BFP: 9/24/11 EDD: 6/5/12 Natural MC: 11/6/11
  • DD1 had something similar at about 7 weeks old. It was seborrhea. Doc actually prescribed a strong anti-dandruff shampoo that they keep behind the pharmacy counter. Hope it clears up quickly for you!

  • Sounds like weeping eczema to me.  It's a b!tch to get rid of.  We're dealing with it right now on El's cheeks.  We tried the dermotologist's route (steroid cream for a month).  That didn't work.  Now I'm going the homeopathic route (going on 2 weeks and it's working) and eliminating dairy, eggs, and gluten from my diet.  For us, it's more than likely a food allergy.

  • Up until about one month ago my baby had very scaly, flaky type dandruff that you could flake off with your finger nail, or a comb, but it was all through his hair. I finally used a dandruff shampoo (only a small amount and was very careful about getting it in his eyes). After about two weeks the problem has gone completely away. The shampoo made a huge difference for us.

He does have eczema and he does have a milk protein allergy.

  • It's a very common side effect to the dairy allergy.  Are you breastfeeding?  Have you eliminated all dairy?  It's hidden in so many things, I have to read every single label.

Honestly, I did not have luck with the steroid cream.  I think it actually did more damage than good, as it appeared to have thinned her skin.  We're on the mend, but it's been a roller coaster ride.  I found a balm that works wonders by Avena Botanicals, it's called Elder Flower Creme.  It's expensive, but I don't really care how much it costs if it works.  Olive or coconut oil will help too.
