Toddlers: 24 Months+

the harm in con't w. bottle?

My DD ( almost 13 mon.) is comforted by the bottle of 1/2 milk and 1/2 formula in the AM when she wakes and then at night b4 going to sleep.  Ped made it sound like he wanted her off the bootle this month.  I forgot to ask then and there---if there would be anything wrong w. con't w/ my present routine (of bottle).

Re: the harm in con't w. bottle?

  • DD is 18 months and still has a naptime and bedtime bottle.  I don't think it is a very big deal.  Her pedi wanted her weaned at 1 year but I plan on doing it around 2 years.  We are very good about brushing her teeth and her bottles usually only have water in them.  I don't think it is any different than having a paci, sucking a thumb, or breastfeeding.

  • I don't think there's anything wrong with it.  It is easier getting them to switch from bottles to sippies when they are younger though.  If the bottle continues to be a part of a comfort ritual, then it may be much more difficult to change that behavior later on.

  • I don't think it's a big deal.  Although DS weaned himself from the bottle at 14mos, I felt better letting him do it himself and not pushing him.  He only got 1 bottle at night before bed and then one night I got his bottle out of the fridge to hand to him and he just kept smacking it away.  So then we just stopped the bottle and he has been fine ever since.  I have several friends whose kids were still getting a bottle at 18 months.
  • We weaned DD at 17months & she did fine.  We are using Nubby sippy cups & are similar to a bottle. I guess the longer they are on it, the more of a security blanket it becomes.

  • We did a bottle until about 18 months.  She's 2.5 now and there has been no problem.  I don't think she remembers using one, never wants one even when she sees DS with it.  She pretty much self weaned, and that was fine.

peds don't know everything.  Different things work for different kids.  Do what feels right for your DD.

  • My 15 mo old still takes a bottle for naps and pedi does not think it's a big deal and neither do I. It used to be that almost all babies had bottles until age 2 and no one ever worried. We all turned out fine. So don't stress over it.
