Acupuncture Question

I'm reading your posts about this in order to prepare for labor. I'm wondering a few things.

When should you do this? Does it matter what week you get this done, especially if you have a history of early delivery/your OB thinks you'll deliver early as well?

What happens during acupuncture? I know needles are involved but for someone that isn't all that fond of needles, is it painful? How can you relax if you don't care for needles?

What are the results? Are they typical for everyone? Would it be beneficial for someone like me that has a scarred cervix?

I'm clueless about this method and am eager to learn about it.

Re: Acupuncture Question

  • As for when to get it I think it varies.  Some people go throughout their entire pregnancy for various reasons but if you are looking for "induction" treatments I would say around 38 weeks.  My friend who does acupuncture has induced our friends usually with one treatment but has done up to 3 or 4.

It does not hurt at all but sometimes when one goes in it can feel a little pricky, but again, not at all painful.  When I've gotten treatments it's always been very relaxing and they talk about the needles and why they don't hurt like medical needles and once that first one goes in you realize it's nothing to fear.

  • I see an acupuncturist on a weekly basis to treat my migraines. It does wonders!  I plan to continue throughout my pg.
  • I can't speak to using it for induction, but my midwife offered it as a pain relief option and I gave it a try. It didn't hurt at all, not even a prick. I felt a small object touching me, and that was it. They even taped them down and I laid on the bed with them on my back and it didn't hurt one bit. (Also didn't help at all, but hey, I tried.)

I think you're going to have to get rid of the scar tissue through direct touch regardless.

  • I have been going my whole pregnancy and it has been so much more pleasant than my first one. She helps with swelling, pain, etc. She has also done some stuff that helped me let go of some of my feelinsg about my CS. Some specific reasons to go are to induce or to get the baby in a good position. My Accupuncturist says you should go by 34 weeks if position is a potential issue since they start to run out of room.
