I don't want to get flamed here. I'm due in April and my baby shower is coming up. I'm just wondering if you started your babies in disposables or pre-folds, and if you started them in disposables, for how long.
One of my friends who is an apprentice midwife and super green-friendly told me even she is using disposables until the baby's meconium is gone because that's impossible to wash out of anything. How long does that last?
I have other friends who are doing disposables for the first month or so. I just want to make sure I register for the right amounts of diapering-related things. Right now, I registered for a bunch of AIO's and already have hand-me-down prefolds and covers, and I registered for one 96 pack of newborn size disposables.
Thanks for any help you can offer! ~Shaindel
Re: What did you start your newborn in?
Meconium looks a lot worse than it is. It will wash out. If it stains, it will sun out. Same with newborn breastfed poo. It stains, and it suns out.
We started in cloth. We used disposables (SeventhGeneration) for a very short along with our CDs while while we were waiting for the rest to arrive. I was so glad when we got enough cloth to do full time. We will CD the next one full time from day one.
The CDs we used were: KL0s, Lil Joeys, and BG AIOs. You will need a "newborn" stash if you want to CD right away because the one-size diapers won't fit until 10-12 pounds so if you go the sposie route, you may be in sposies for a while.

I just read online that meconium only lasts a few days. I honestly do not even remember it with my son but my husband has talked about the tar poop. I guess that it was he is referring to.
I plan on using disposibles in the the hospital. The hospital usually sends you home with some so I will likely use those and any other I have before starting cloth. I am guessing a week or so.
We used disposables for 2 weeks until her cord fell off. We tried cloth during that time but the velcro closure rubbed her cord. If they'd been snap closure, we probably would have been fine. Once she was in cloth we used infant prefolds with xs Thirsties covers.
The hospital gave use disposable diapers when we left so we didn't need to buy any. We just asked our nurse what supplies in the recovery room we should take with us. She told us but also went to the stock room and got us a couple packs of diapers and the absorbent momma pads and mesh unders.

DD was in the nicu, so we didn't have to worry about the meconium. Once she was home, we used up the few diapers from the hospital at night and cd during the day. After the hospital diapers were gone, we used all cloth.
DD was only 5 lbs when she came home and the only thing that fit were prefolds and thirsties xs covers.
If you think that disposibles will be easier for the first few days, then use them! Your first few weeks will be a complete haze and its all about survival. If using cloth is too much at first, then don't do it!
Thanks so much, Everyone! I'll go re-inventory the hand-me-downs friends have given me and see how much I actually have there. What looks like a giant bag of diapering stuff to a newbie is probably actually the tip of the iceberg of what I'll actually need.
