I was offered one of the jobs!

They wanted me to start today! I couldn't because of the other interview. They are calling me so I can come in tomorrow. Wow!

I went in and filled out a quiz they wanted me to take and when that was done they asked me to take a typing test. On a typewriter. Funny how they wanted to make sure their person knew how to use a typewriter. They are so old school now. There were some other applicants there as well and some they didn't ask to take the typing test so that was plus one for me. When I was done with the typing test the had me do another from a handwritten note to see if I could decipher the handwriting. They seemed really impressed that I could do that. Which I thought was funny and then one girl said to another girl that they should just hire me right then. I did feel bad for the other applicants though because they were all just sitting there next to me. After that typing/ handwriting test they made me do a couple of invoices to see if I picked it up fast and I did and they offered me the job right then. In front of the other applicants. That made me feel bad too but hey I need this job and its good pay and I was obviously the best qualified so I can't feel too bad. Right?

I'm still going to the other interview because they may pay more. So we'll see.

  • I knew it! Congrats!

That is kinda strange - offering to you in front of everyone. What if you wanted to discuss income and negotiate?  hmmm?

They wanted me to stay and talk to them about all of that privately but since I have the other interview I told them I couldn't. They are going to call me with specifics instead. The specifics wouldn't have been in front of the others. I wouldn't have felt comfortable with that. I haven't officially said yes because of those issues but I know most of the offerings based on the application and testing process. I know salary and benefits package details.

I agree that it was weird. I know those other applicants must have left discouraged. I know I would have.

  • Congratulations! Is this the one that offers part time hours? I'm happy for you but I would question their ethics if they would do that in front of other applicants, it doesn't seem very professional. Don't take a job just because you need one, make sure you want to work there and you like the job. Who uses typewriters and conducts their interviews in front of other applicants? Just sounds odd to me.

Its not the one that offered the part time hours. I really like that opportunity as well. That interview went really well and I think I may get an offer on that one but they don't offer benefits.

The first one was a pretty laid back atmosphere. They use the typewriter for some forms that need to be filled out. Like shipping forms. That part wasn't odd to me because at almost every job I've had some of it involved a typewriter. You would think all forms could be done on a computer but that's not always true. I also had to take a test on the computer to show I did in fact know how to use one.

It wasn't so much that they conducted the interviews in front of other applicants. It was that we were all taking the tests or not taking the tests in the general office area. If they thanked them before getting to certain tests then that was pretty indicative of not getting the job. One chick did say to the girl hiring that she should hire me on the spot and even though I knew they were talking about me specifically the other applicants wouldn't know that.

To be honest I'm torn between the two. The first one is great pay and benefits but I would have to put LO in daycare. The second is same pay but part time after tax season and no benefits. The pay works out the same because of the offset of daycare. But we need benefits. Private insurance is expensive.
