What are you packing for the hosp?

I just saw one about what you get at the hospital, but what are you packing?  2nd timers - anything you missed the first time but will pack this time?

I know, I know, it's early.  BUT I know two girls that very recently went in and delivered around 30 weeks.  Can't hurt to be somewhat prepared. (Type-A, insane, anal: yep I can get that way sometimes.)

Also, my cousin was telling me a horror story about what her insurance did and didn't cover.  She was charged for a percentage of every single thing she used - shampoo (used one time), a bar of soap, pads, hosp underpants, etc, etc.  I'd rather bring my own if I have to pay for it anyway.

Re: What are you packing for the hosp?

  • When I sit and think about it, the more I realize I could get away with not packing anything at all.  The first time I packed two bags of which the contents I hardly touched.  I brought clothes but wore hospital gowns.  So here is what I want to bring for sure this time:

-Ipod for listening to hypnobabies and music

-A couple bottles of water and possibly snacks (did not feel like eating at all during my labor the first time)

-Flip flops (shoes didn't fit over my uber swollen feet)

-going home clothes for baby and me

This is NUTS! I am type A too so I can't wait to hear what experienced moms say...

  • With DS I packed a couple comfy outfits, underwear, sandals, bras, toiletries.

This time around I will be packing sandals, sweats, bras, underwear, a pillow to sit on when I leave hospital. (They wouldn't give me one to go home on in car, I had a horrible delivery :( Toothbrush, toothpaste, make up!! cold cream, and moisturizer.

Oh and for baby receiving blankets (my own), clothes, and hats :) I'm not just packing a coming home outfit. The only thing they had to put DS in was a onesie that was way too big for him the whole time we were there. I had such a terrible vaginal birth that I was there for 4 days. This time around I will make sure to have enough outfits everyday to put baby in that fit her, in case I were there longer than 2 days.

  • I have already thought about this and DH were seriously talking about this last night. lol

I am not planning on brings pads or anything like that, I fully plan on using everything the hospital can give me. I am bringing:

-Comfy clothes to wear at the hospital, I will wear the hospital gowns during my c/s but the moment I can get clothes of my own on, I will. I hate hospital gowns, just be sure what ever you bring are ok to get dirty and its not a fashion show.

-My own shampoo, conditioner and soap. The hospital's sucked and I want to smell good. I may also bring some basic eye shadow, and some other basic cosmetics.

-Lots and lots of snacks, sodas and bottled water for DH. They didn't offer him any food at all and he was hungry the whole time.

-A pillow and blanket for DH all he used last time was a sheet and the throw pillow that was on the sleeper chair and he was miserable at night, (we were there for 5 days)

    - flip flops

-Going home clothes for baby and I.

-The car seat, they won't let you leave without one.

    - my electric breast pump and nipple guard.

  • I think I packed too much last time.

    I will be a scheduled c/s.  Here's my list:

nursing pajamas, nursing bra, nursing pads in case you start to leak, Lansinoh Lanolin for the nips (I had my friend run out and get it for me because I didn't know about it), socks, slippers, hair accessories (clips, ponies), toothbrush, toothpaste, my own bathroom stuff (soap, shampoo), going home outfit for me, camera, video camera, extra batteries if they use it, something to put the baby's first footprint on (My hospital wouldn't give us one they did or make a copy).  I think that's it.

the hospital supplies you underwear and pads so you don't need to bring many underwear from home. i brought magazines and books but didn't use them.  All my down time was spent sleeping.  Maybe if you have a regular birth you won't be on pain meds and you will want to read or listen to music.

  • I used everything I took last time, so I'm planning on the same items:

    -my own pillow

-dark pj pants (2 pair), nursing tanks, robe, slippers

    -makeup/toiletries

    -hard candy, Chapstick

-my own dark fluffy towels from home

-iPod, speaker dock, laptop, camera and chargers

-baby book, infant carseat, blanket (it was still chilly in early May when my DS was born) and take home outfit for baby

  • I didn't go into labor, so I didn't need an iPod, books, etc to keep me busy.

I Need: Cute PJs (you get a TON of visitors), yoga pants, makeup, hair stuff, etc. My own pillow (this was a blessing!). Nursing bra/tanks! CAMERA! :)

Baby Needs: Clothes in Newborn and 0-3. Warm and cool outfits just in case. Baby Hats. Baby mittens. A blanket to bring home to the dog. Receiving blankets (hospitals don't like you to take theirs, and newborns are usually swaddled in 2 at a time to keep warm) Baby book for footprints in the hospital.

For DH: clothes (he will forget to pack).

    Do NOT need this time:

BOPPY. Biggest waste of space. I remember throwing it all over the room as people were in and out- it was in the way and pillows are a-plenty in the hospital.

Laptop. Complete waste of time/space. I'll bring my phone and possibly iPod Touch. Truth is I wasn't on Facebook or thebump for about 10 days PP. No time or interest (and I was hardcore FBer... thinking I'd be on FB in the hospital! Ha!)

  • hmm well let me remember... outside of the obvious,

Comfy loose DARK sweatpants- for after delivery once you can get out of the gown

Laptop- to upload pics & update folks

Dark colored socks- walking around on dirty floors will make your white socks gross

Loose long sleeve tops & spandex camis- easy for breastfeeding, layering, and kangaroo time

Champagne- to toast, this was fun last time

My own pillows- I brought my snoogle, seriously can't live without that thing ha

That's really it because our hospital stocked us up good as far as treatment for myself and baby, plus their food was BOMB, and they had tv with all the latest new releases to entertain myself if I was bored.

Baby needs onesies to wear while you're there if you stay more than a day or two, we were leant some onesies from the NICU to use. Otherwise, just a coming home outfit and a blanket to cover the carseat.

Daddy needs a pillow, snacks, and a camera. He chose to eat out at Chipotle for every meal rather than at the hospital since his meals weren't free like mine were.

    Had no need for-
Snacks (I am a constant eater but had no desire to eat while in labor for over 24 hrs, NONE)

Shampoo/soaps (after my delivery and episiotomy it took me a good 5 days to get the courage to get in the shower, I was terrified of how bad it would hurt so there was no showering in the hospital)

Magazines (I had a ton of friends/family and plenty of nurses to keep me entertained the whole time)

    Boppy- just too much clutter

Ipod- the tv played music and I didn't care for any anyways

all I can think of right now

  • I'll actually be packing much more than I did with DD. I expected that the hospital would have essential items, but didn't realize they would suck so much!haha

All my toiletries and essentials to get ready for the day. I will be taking some regular plain black haines underwear, few change of clothes, boppy pillow, breast pump, cloth diapers, outfits for baby, chapstick, always purple overnight pads (the ones the hospital provided were regular pads, nothing special or bigger). Camera, cell, and chargers. Maybe my lap top? Who knows! Nursing tanks/bras.

Probably some things I'll think of later, but that's about it.

  • This is my first so I have no experience, but based on previous hospital stays and what I have read, this is what I plan to take:

    For Me

My own pajamas - obviously can't wear during labor, but after

Shampoo and soap -I do plan on showering, I don't care how much it hurts. I was in the shower after the last surgery I had as soon as I was allowed, and I will be with this one too. I have to shower every day haha.

My own pillow, not my snoogle though because it's too big and maybe a throw blanket from home

Flip flops, socks with rubber treads, regular socks

A towel, toothbrush, hair brush - I'd rather have my own stuff

    Sleep bras and underwear

Vitamin water - I'm an addict and I know they wont have any lol

    Makeup, deodorant

A candle or some other sort of scenty thing, on the tour they said they encourage moms to bring things like that to make the delivery room more relaxing for them

    For DH

    Pillow and blankets

    PJs, extra clothes

    Toothbrush

Laptop - he was so excited when we went on the tour and they said they had wifi haha

    Camera

    For LO

    Blankets

    Car seat - obviously

    Onesies

    A few outfits

    Baby book (footprint)

ETA: My kindle, books to study for finals, or bar prep books, depending on when LO decides to come.

  • A going home outfit for me

    nursing bra, underwear

    Socks and slippers

    Robe

Kindle (if I'm busy, my husband will appreciate it too after the birth)

A mister with a fan (awesome during all the pushing)

A going home outfit for baby NB and 0-3 (who knows how big baby will be)

My own receiving blankets (just a couple)

    nursing pads, lanolin

moist facewash cloths (I couldn't get out of bed for a few days with first)

Dry shampoo (see above) and little samplers of shampoo and conditioner in case I can take a real shower! I might see if there is such a thing as pre-soaped cloths for my body (I know they make them for babies)

That's all I can think of for now. I know I brought way to much last time. It is better to be over prepared, especially if its your first.

  • I over packed with DD so I am packing light this time.

I need to remember to bring:

-Shower Sandals...I know it's a hospital but it still creeps me out to be walking around in my bare feet

    - My own shampoo, soap, washcloths, towel, tooth paste & brush, contacts, solution, glasses etc. They had SMALL towels and no soap or shampoo there...

-Remember deodorant. With all the hormones and hot flashes you will STINK easily so make sure to have deodorant.  I had a travel sample kind for the hospital bag (not one I usually use) and now when I smell it I instantly remember all about the hospital stay...crazy

-Phone, laptop and camera as well as their chargers...

    -My OWN cozy pillow.

-Going home outfit for me and LO, receiving blanket and hat for LO as well for ride ome

    - My hospital I delivered DD at had a policy no outside vitamins of drugs (so you can be monitored etc, they have to have a list etc of all your intakes obviously) so I had to set up with my OB and the nurses before hand with meds I HAD to take (like allergy etc)

Cozy clothes for myself  and a robe that wont rub or constrict. That was a life saver, the gowns were good for the first day but after that I was sick of them

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I'm a scheduled c-section, so most of the "during labor" things are out for me. Baby and I will be in the hospital for 3 days, though...so here's my list.

    For me:

Dark pj bottoms & yoga pants, nursing tanks, robe, slippers. Makeup & makeup removing wipes. Shampoo, conditioner & body wash. Hair brush, tooth brush, tooth paste. Contacts & gear, glasses. 3 pack black Hanes granny panties. Pillow from home, quilt from home, digital camera & charger...

    For baby:

A few snap-side kimono long sleeved tees (pulling a shirt down over a newborn's head can be stressful for the first few days), socks, and hats. A one piece to go home in, a few blankets...and the car seat.

Yeah. I wrote down car seat. We forgot the car seat with DD...it was in my car and we took his car. He had to go home and get it. This time, we wrote it on the list.
