Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Have you used a baby carrier?

Coming over from 12-24 months with a question.  When my DD was a newborn (now 15 months) I purchased a Moby wrap, but never had much luck with it.  It was cumbersome to put on and my DD never seemed comfortable in it.

Now with #2 on the way I'm looking for something else.  I'm posting on here because I would like a carrier that especially works well for young babies and newborns since I'll primarily use it while I'm on maternity leave.

Please share what carrier you use (or have tried) and if you liked it.

Thanks!

Re: Have you used a baby carrier?

  • We LOVE our baby bjorn. I tried the moby and ended up wasting my money. Just didnt work for us! The bjorn is easy to put on, easy to get him in and out, and my back never hurts. (The complaint I read about in reviews was about the back!)

  • I use my carrier all the time.  I have an ergo and it's awesome, they even sell an infant insert so you can use it for squishies too.  I am waiting for my woven wrap in the mail ATM, but wovens are pretty awesome.

The Attachment Parenting board are expert at this subject :)  HTH!

edit: bjorns and carriers like it are said to be very bad for the baby's spine.   Think about how uncomfortable it would be for your entire body weight to be supported by a piece of cloth between your legs....if you're looking for something inexpensive, infantino now sells ergo and mei tai knockoffs for under $40.

  • I am probably not much help because I have a Moby which I used a lot when she was little. IMO it is a pain in the butt to put on and go places with. I ordered a sling from sevenslings.com and used it while flying with LO when she was 2 and 3 months old and loved it for that purpose. It was great for that purpose because it was easy to get her in and out of quickly.

Check out the AP board, there is a lot of information on BWing over there.

  • I have a hotsling carrier, and I think it's pretty great. It's all 1 piece of fabric so no wrapping required.

  • We LOVE the Bejourn... feels great on our backs, and she loves it!

  • I LOVE my Ergo, and so does DS.  He was super fussy when he was younger but he was always happy in it!  And will usually fall asleep in it without fussing.  I also recommend the infant insert like pp mentioned.

  • I too love the Moby wrap. I wasn't a fan at first, but after some practice it became much easier to get on and off.

  • We love the Ergo and with the nb insert you can use it from day one. It's not only ergonomical for your back but also for your baby. I like that I can wear her in front, on the side and as she gets older, on my back. It is definitely worth the money.

  • Thanks for the tip on the Attachment Parenting board, I'll check over there too!

  • I love my Ergo.  But I also like the Moby - just need to get more comfortable with it.

  • I have a hot slings and a beco carrier.  I like both of them.  The hot slings is very easy to put her in and easy to put on.  I like it for around the house or short trips.  I have taken her grocery shopping in it a bit.  The beco I like for longer trips out.  It is a little harder to put on but works great.

  • I love the Ergo! I use it every week when we go to the market. The infant insert is kinda necessary until the kid is comfortable being splayed. The cushion comes out and can be used to boost them in the carrier long after they outgrow the swaddle portion of the insert.
  • I have a few ring slings, a mei tai, and a few wraps. I use them all, but started off with my ring sling and love it the most. It is easy, very adjustable, and I always feel like my DS is supported. I've been using it since my DS was 6 weeks old, when I finally bought it. I love my wraps too, but if you didn't like the Moby, you probably won't like those.

FWIW, I had a Moby at the beginning and realized now 1) my DS was probably too heavy for it 2) almost everyone (including myself) puts it on too loosely.

  • I have the Beco Carrier and I love it. IT's not bulky so I can sit at a restaurant with DS in it sleep and its great for going places that a stroller is not an option (Football game, basketball games, etc..) I also wear him sometimes around the house.
  • For the infant stage I use a bjorn type carrier and when LO gets big enough I LOVE my Ergo.  She is too big to use the infant insert though which is why I use the bjorn
  • The biggest problem with the bjorn is that it only goes up to about 20 lbs or so?

So you can't use it for a long time like you can with Ergo or Beco. We had an Ergo until DS1 was six months, and then I got a Beco Butterfly, which I adore and have been primarily using with DS2. I also have a Maya ring sling, which is good, but hurt my back too much with DS2. I think I'll start using it around the house when DS2 can sit up in it more.

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I have a Mayan wrap, and used that when DD was up to about 6 weeks, then I switched over to our Jeep carrier. The wrap was a bit tricky to use at first, but I had a friend show me and then it made sense, and I liked the adjustability. We really like our Jeep carrier, and it was super affordable. We use it all the time. I rarely take DD out in public without it. Grocery shopping is much easier with both hands and the whole cart free! She's also a much happier baby when she's close. I even use it when I'm doing housework.
