Heat or massage afterwards?

Re: PIO tips?

  • Hello!

I was doing 1cc nightly.  I had no pain or anything!  I have heard to warm the bottle a bit by cupping it with your hands.

    Best of luck to you!!

  • Heat before, heat and massage after!  I also stick the vial in my bra for about 15 minutes before the shot.  I don't think you're supposed to use ice, because it can thicken the oil and make it harder to absorb.

  • Stillwaiting, you make it sound so easy.
Magnolia, got it. My H is so excited about the massage. Major eye roll and blush.

That's interesting - I thought you were supposed to ice the spot before and then heat after (and warm the bottle next to your skin beforehand).

What size needle do you use to inject?  I've heard that makes a difference as well.

  • Cute, I've heard both, but the heat makes more sense. I don't need the numbing I rather the oil spreading easily.
Oh and I was given 22, but my old RE gave me 23, he said it was the smallest you can get the oil to work on.
I would like to know what others are using.

  • Heat and massage afterwards for sure.  If not you can get lumps under the skin.  I still did but it def. hurt a lot more the day after if DH didn't rub it after for at least a few minutes.

I don't think doing anything before helped.

What type of oil is it in?  You can use a thinner needle or at least I did if you do the ethyl oleate (sp.?) vs. sesame or some other other oils.  I started out with sesame and 22 gauge needle and switched to the ethyl olate and I think a 25 gauge needle both felt the same going in but I was def. less sore from the latter.

I hope it is ok I am responding Huh?

  • Thanks mdluv. Of course it's ok.
I think it's the sesame oil. They said if I can't tolerate it we could discuss an alternative. I did endometrin for an iui and my lining had always been terrific. Shrug.
    Anything sounds better than 22.
I could definitely feel the difference between 28 and 30 for the belly shots.

  • I don't have to do PIO so I'm no help. Just wanted to say good luck!

Well if you are really sore after the sesame oil ask if you can switch to the other type.  I had to do PIO and a suppository for my IVF cycle even though I had never really had lining issues.  I don't think they like to leave anything to chance and since you have kind of tricked your body into everything during an IVF cycle they don't want to assume your body will start producing enough progesterone on its own and the one good thing about PIO is that is shows in your b/w.  After my second beta they let me stop it because my progesterone was so high. Hopefully, the same will happen for you.  Smile
