Babies: 9 - 12 Months

declan's first trip to er

at 10am this morning, declan became very lethargic and limp while i was brushing his hair. we had just gotten dressed and he was talkative and happy on his changing table and had been in his crib for about 20 minutes looking at a book prior...i brought him to justin to show him how limp he was (he was still alert and looking around) and as we discussed how strange his behavior was he suddenly became red faced and stiff. he was seizing in our arms and i brought him to the couch and held him for a few seconds before placing him on the rug with a pillow. i was crying and trying to make sure he was still breathing while justin called 911. he came out of it after about a minute or two, though it felt like 15, and he reached up at my face and i picked him up.

after this many hours in the hospital, the cause is unknown and we are going to see his ped and probably a ped neurologist this week for a follow up. no fever, no infection, no ideas.

anyone's dc have seizures? i am so upset and we haven't even been given any "bad" news, yet. i am trying not to  overthink it and take it one step at a time, but it is incredibly difficult right now.

any advice, anecdotes, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Re: declan's first trip to er

  • Is it possible he had a fever that dropped back to normal temp quickly?  I know that can cause a seizure.

I hope it all goes well!  Good luck!

  • Oh, how scary!  I don't have any experience with this, I just wanted to say I'll be sending good vibes your way.  I know there are moms on this board who have dealt with seizures.  Keep posting during the week.  You'll get more responses.

(Also, Declan is one of my favorite names.)

  • I've never had a child with seizures but have seen quite a few (I'm an MD). Sometimes they don't find good reasons for seizures in kids. The most common reason for them, especially in babies, is fever. Even EEGs and MRIs don't often show a lot. I hope they do find something and are able to tell you something. Good Luck!

  • I am so sorry.  How pitiful.  I had a student with daily seizures a few years ago and it broke my heart to watch him.  I can't imagine if it was my own son.  I pray the doctors will be able to give you the info you need.
  • My DD has had 2 series of seizures and is now diagnosed with epilepsy.  The 1st round occured when she was 2 weeks old.  The second series was when she was 5 months.  Both times we were admitted to our Children's Hospital.  When she was 5 months she had I think 8 seizures total before they gave her medicine in the ER to stop them.  We even had to spend the night in the PICU.  She has had 2 EEGs, a CT scan, countless blood tests and everything always comes back normal.  We are scheduled to do an MRI this coming Friday.  I am assuming it will come back normal as well.  I took her temp after every seizure episode and she never had one.  So at this point there is no obvious cause which is the case in a lot of seizures in babies if not fever related.  My DD is now on anti-seizure medication and we follow-up with our ped neurologist every 3 months to adjust her meds and check for developmental delays.  So far she is developing normally.  She could get herself into a sitting position at 5 months and started crawling before 6 months.  I feel lucky that we have a very good Childrens Hospital near us and I feel very comfortable with the neurologist clinic there.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I know how scary it is!
