Anyone with teaching degree, but do something different?

Anyone with a teaching degree, but not in the classroom?  If so, what do you do?  How do you like it?  Does it make more or less than teaching?

Kind of getting burned out of the classroom and thinking about trying something different, but don't know what yet.  Sometimes I feel so limited with my degree :(

  • I have my early childhood degree and taught K for 5 years... I then moved back to my home state of NJ and there were no openings in my certification (everything was upper grades or math/science/special ed)... so i was desperate for any job and a friend who worked at a software company had an opening she knew i'd do well at - and I got it.

I was an admin for a regional director + office manager and then also did a lot of events planning for our marketing dept, since I was more qualified than the average person with my job- they gave me more responsibiltiy.  I loved it and did that for 2 years before that office was getting shut down.

since then I have been in pharmaceutical sales. Sadly it's close to impossible to get into this industry now with the insane amount of layoffs we have had.... because in general they like to hire teachers - there are a LOT of parts of teaching that transfer over to this job in many ways.

I was considering getting my real estate license back then, too.... sadly, another thing that sucks to do now.

I wasn't looking to leave teaching when i did - but now that i'm out of it I will never go back - i make more money now, have more respect, more flexibility, and so much LESS stress than I did teaching.... and I really loved teaching- but once i was out of it i realized how stressed i always was - the knots in my stomach every day i had from it, etc.... now, that's all gone.

while it's a crappy time to look for any type of job- things still happen!  maybe this summer look and see if you can get some interviews- since you'll be off (assuming you are).... if you are getting burnt out it's always good to look elsewhere- and at least you'll learn what is avail - and if it's worth leaving or not.

  • I have a degree in Early Childhood education and I work for an investment company.  I used to be the director of an after school program/summer camp but when times got tough I needed to find a steady paycheck... I miss the kids, but I don't miss the tight times!

  • Thanks for the info.  I am torn on what to do.  Teaching can be very stressful, but I have to admit that the time off is hard to beat.  Just wondering what else is out there :)
  • I have my MA in Adolescent Ed for Social Studies. I realized in student teaching that it was not for me (and God bless anyone in the field making it work, with NCLB, inclusion and parents/kids that do not want to take self-responsibility). I now work in university administration for a study abroad office; started off in the Registrar's office working with graduation. This path still requires my organizational skills, I still have student interaction with advising and scholarship committees. But I do not have to be 'on' every single day, and my work stays at the office most of the time. My co-workers/management drive me a bit batty, but that could happen anywhere. Salary is about the same (I work for a state university with unionization, probably would make a bit more at a private school), and benefits decent. I sometimes wish I had the summer breaks and snow days that teachers get, lol, but I know all too well that teaching would be a heck of a lot more work day-to-day,

  • I have a SPED EC-12 but I work in an aftercare program for adults with IDD.  However, I am trying to get into the classroom.  2 interviews, no job.

  • I have a teaching degree but went on to get a school counseling degree. I like it much better, I am still helping kids, but not all the time, and I work a school schedule with a higher pay.
  • I got a masters in Library & Info Science and although I studied School Media, I work in a public library as a children/teen librarian.  Although I make less money, I take absolutely no work home, have little stress, and get great benefits working in a city department.  Plus, I get paid to read picture books, play with puppets and put stickers on books!

  • I've been teaching for 6 years and am totally burned out.  My passion is baking, and my dream is to open a small business doing custom cakes, cookies, and cupcakes.  However, in this economy I'm terrified to leave a good job for something that might not pan out.  We're moving home soon, and I plan on looking for something in administration at the local community college.  I'd like to stay in the educational field, just not in the classroom.  I'd love to work in student affairs or something of that sort.
