Cloth Diapering

XP: Sitter and CDs

DS has been going to the same sitter since he was 4 months old. Our sitter agreed to cloth diapering and we have had no problems... until lately. DS is an extremely heavy wetter. I use BG 3.0 and 4.0 and we have had to use two or three microfiber inserts. I just recently bought a couple of hemp inserts that work well also.

As I am trying to figure out what works for DS, the sitter has requested that we use disposables for nap time. I am fine with it as long as she continues to use the CD for "awake" time. Over the past couple of weeks, she has not used ANY cloth diapers during his awake time. She claims that he is constantly peeing through them (he is usually wearing a new outfit when I pick him up).

Today, I asked her to please use disposables for nap time and to use the cloth for the rest of the day... when I picked DS up, she told me that she just went ahead and used disposables all day because DS leaked through the cloth diaper that she put him in for his nap. I was so confused because we talked this morning about wearing disposables for nap only...

Basically, I think that she is starting to give up on the cloth. I know that it is frustrating when a makes a mess at least once a day, but I don't want to give up.

So here's my questions- Would not using cloth diapers any more be a deal breaker for you with the sitter?

AND- do you have any other suggestions on what to try (different inserts??)?

Sorry so long! TIA!

  • She should be doing what you ask, you are paying her.  Would she feed different food if what you sent was not as easy as all the other kids?  We all knwo that it's no extra work for her to do the cloth, if she does it right.  There's no reason that there should be so many leaks, maybe at nap time but not the rest of the day.  I would say she's not putting them on right, give her a tutorial and insist that she do the cloth.  I would also only bring 1 disposable for each nap time.

I worked in day care for a number of years and *always* did what the parents asked.  If it was completely insane or ridiculous we would at least come to a compromise after discussions and numerous attempts.  But, she just seems like she doesn't want to bother.  It may be a deal breaker for me because if she's not listening to your wishes with this, she may not listen to you for other things later on.

    Good luck!

  • While I agree that she should be doing what you request it also sounds like there really is a leaking issue if he is always in different clothes when you pick him up.

I would cut her a little slack until you have figured out a drier solution, but like pp said maybe you can make sure she is using them correctly and understands that he may need to be changed a little more often.

  • I'd do a little digging to find out why they're leaking. When DD was in daycare, she was in disposables, and one of the DCPs couldn't put a diaper on her correctly at all. We had at least 3 soiled onesies a week, whereas we never had problems.

It could be that she's not using them correctly and you need to go over it with her again. I'd start there.
