Baby Sammy-PIP- Birth story- Induction turned C-section

After being 10 days late, my little boy was born on 1/11/11 at 8:37 pm.8 pounds, 5 ounces, 20.5 inches.  Here is my birth story.

I walked in to the hospital on 1/10/11 at 8:00 pm for my scheduled induction. Upon admittance I was 2 cm and 50% effaced. After checking in the doctor implanted Cervadil at about 10:00 p.m. The plan was that it would soften my cervix and we would start Pitocin the next morning. At about 12:00am I was contracting significantly and was given some Nubane(?) to relieve the pain. Thank heavens for that! I was able to sleep until about 4am when the contractions were strong enough for the epidural. After the epidural they broke my water, implanted the catheter, and started Pitocin. I was comfortable and progressing. By about noon I was 7 cm, and by 2pm they told me I was 9cm and they started setting out all of the medical equipment for the delivery. Our families were all in the waiting room. We were so excited! Here's where things went slightly awry.

At about 4:00, I started feeling my contractions (pain, not pressure)... I was still 9 cm. I asked for top off my epi, but they said there was a problem because they shouldn't have to top it off as much as they had been over the past few hours. By the time they figured out that the epi was leaking out of my back, I was in full blown labor with no epi, no pain meds. It was a long hour and a half before they decided to take out the epi and put a new one in. Fortunately it worked and I was comfortable once again. Still 9 cm.

At about 6:00 it was evident that I was not progressing past 9 cm. The baby's heart rate was going up and I was developing a fever. That's when they started talking about a c-section. My temp was 103 degrees. I agreed...and after the most exhausting day of my life, Samuel Lowery was delivered at 8:37 pm.Turns out he was "sunny side up", so he probably wouldn't have come out any time soon anyways.  I practically slept through most of the surgery, while my DH was able to hold and bond with the baby. Sammy was born with 101 degree temperature and had to be taken to the special care nursury for antibiotics for a few hours. We were reunited in our hospital room later that night and both of us had our temperatures return to normal after several courses of antibiotics. Other than the fever, he was completely healthy and is absolutely gorgeous. I feel so blessed to have such a healthy little boy.
