Just wanted to add that you can donate it. Someone on here posted a link a few weeks ago with hospitals that do it. Unfortunately, none were in my area.
During my last preg., I researched it by talking to my doc, other moms and reading and all arrows pointed to it being a waste of money.
agreed. you spend all this money to have it banked and don't even know if it's viable/if you got enough for it to actually be a benefit to you. I'd much rather see people donate cord blood than send it to for profit blood banks.

I think donating is the way to go if you can. It is determined right away if it is viable and worth storing. It will help someone who needs it sooner versus the what if down the road. There is also a chance that in the event you would need it, you won't even be able to use your baby's cord blood on itself or on a sibling. I find this FAQ helpful: https://www.marrow.org/HELP/Donate_Cord_Blood_Share_Life/Cord_Blood_Donation_FAQs/index.html#donate
I am planning on banking cord blood. My Goddaughter was diagnosed with an illness and her cord blood was transfused into her and shes doing great. For her specific illness only her own cord blood could be used so thank God they had it banked. Its just insurance and who knows where science and cord blood will advance.
I will for sure donate it to a public bank, not for potential personal use. From my understanding it's quite rare that someone in your family will actually benefit from it (though very cool that your goddaughter did, Vachara).
We used CBR with out first pregnancy. I really have no pros/cons as far as each agency goes but CBR was easy to use.
That being said, I'm really on the fence as to whether or not we'll do it again. I go back and forth on whether or not it is a good insurance policy or whether it's just a money trap.
I took all of my baby classes at a cord bank and received a lot of information. I also talked to friends that are Doctors and advised that it is not necessary. It is more beneficial if you are a minority based on the research I received. So we did not do it. The cost is another issue.
I considered it briefly during my pregnancy, but wrote it off thinking that something like cancer could never happen to my baby... I turned out to be very wrong. We found out that my daughter had cancer when she was 3 weeks old. Granted my daughter's situation is rare, but childhood cancer happens more than any parent wants to acknowledge. If you have the ability and income to afford it, do it. If you have the opportunity to donate it please consider it.

Thinking about cord blood donation to a bank. Need to find out if our hospital does it.

This exactly. I would have donated if that were an option in our hospital.
