We're considering cancelling the bday party all together and just going on a family trip. If we're going to spend this much money, we'd much rather create a great family experience than pay for a meal for a bunch of people who don't even get along. We'd still have a bday cake for Claire and take lots of pics. It would just be without the awkward family tension.

Thoughts?

That sounds like a great idea. You want happy memories of her 1st bday...not stressful ones. Sure, her grandparents will probably be pissed but it's their fault for not acting like grown ups.

I would do it with all of the tension surrounding the day. The last thing you need is a bunch of BRATS at Claire's first birthday.

Thats what we are doing....Not a far trip but a trip. We are going out to dinner Friday which will be her birthday. And our immediate family is welcome to come if they choose. Then Sat. morning we are headed up to Houston for a day at the zoo, stay at a hotel that night and hang out sun morning in town then head home. She has never been to the zoo so it should be fun.

You will def. hurt some people's feelings. Not that you don't know that, but it's the inevitable consequence. I do agree that the pros greatly outweigh the cons, so logically this makes complete sense. Besides the fact that Claire's 1st Bday should be fun, for eff's sake?! I am glad you are doing what's best for you and your family! I'm sorry for all that you have gone through with this, sounds insane (in the membrane).
