Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did you use a baby carrier?

I purchased the Moby when my DD was a newborn, but never had much luck with it.  It was cumbersome to put on and my DD never seemed comfortable in it.  With #2 on the way I'm looking for something else.  I would like a carrier that especially works well for newborns as that will give me some hands free time to get things done around the house and tend to DD while I'm on maternity leave.

Please share what carrier you used and if you liked it.

  • The Ergo.  You can get the infant insert for it to use with the new LO.  It can be used for a very long time as well.  I think it says it can hold up to 90 lbs (not that you would) on their website.  I know people who use it and their kids are 3-4 years old.  My DS is 17 months and I am just switching to that one now.

  • I had a moby as well I liked it at home but I always felt embarrased to use it in public because the fabric is SO long.  The ergo is pretty easy to use and comfortable.
  • I used my Moby a good bit as DD had to stay upright after she ate. When she was a little older I bought a Poppy Pouch. I stilll use it with DD if we are just running into a store. It's way quicker and easier to use than her stroller and DD enjoys being able to see me and to look around.

  • I used a moby when DS was a newborn, but it was a bit cumbersome to get on sometimes.  I then switched to an ergo and have used it regularly since then.  You can get an infant insert for it.  DS always seems comfortable and happy in it.

  • I had a Moby and could never get it tied just right.  DD would start to slouch in it, she would eventually over-heat and cry.  My back was starting to hurt after only a short walk etc.

I got the Ergo and eliminated all those problems.  My daughter is 22 lbs now and I have no problem carrying her in it.  The weight is evenly distributed on the hips, not so much on the back and shoulders.

  • Can't rave enough about the ergo. That thing has been a lifesaver. DD is 14 months and we still use it fairly often. It's been especially awesome for travel too.

I agree - get the Ergo! I didn't get mine until DD was like 10 months old and I wish I had gotten it sooner.  We only had the Bijorn till then - the Bijorn is fine when they are little, but when they get older it kills your back!

  • DH uses the Ergo, I use a Babyhawk Mei Tai.  Both are great, DS is 22 pounds and we can carry him for hours in either carrier.  DS is a snuggler, so it's great that I can be close to him and still have my hands free.  Love it!

  • Another Ergo lover here!

For the newborn/little baby age, a mei tai works well too. Or a sling like the hotsling-I have quite a few friends who swear by their hotslings. I have a sevenslings sling (similar to the hotsling), but I didn't get it until a few months ago so I have no experience with it for little babies.

  • I had the same problem as you with the moby and switched to the Ergo when my DS was around 8 months or so.  I loved it, so much better than the moby.
  • I'm a baby hawk user, DD is 21lbs and it's very comfortable and easy to use

  • I still use it and DS is almost 19m. I usually use our Ergo. I love it. It's the best baby purchase ever.

  • I didn't like the Moby (but since have started using woven wraps and I LOVE wrapping).  I love my Ergo, my Babyhawk Mei Tai (probably my favorite), my Maya wrap (second favorite) and a number of others I've had along the way.
