3rd Trimester

dr couldn't reach cervix?

i had my 36 week appointment this am. The baby's head is very low (hence all the pressure i've been having!) however, she could not reach my cervix to check it. she said it was tilted back and that she was trying to reach around the head but she couldn't do it.

She said next week it should be easier to reach.

i got a check at 34 weeks (due to travel) by ultrasound bc the NP had a similar problem. My cervix was 2 cm (in?) and closed. I'm just curious if anyone else has had something similar happen and I'm trying to figure out the fact that his head is so low means i will have him early . . .or maybe not bc of how my cervix is positioned. I asked the doctor, but she is pretty noncommittal :)

thanks!

  • Maybe she has small hands?  Smile

  • Your cervix is still posterior.  It will move forward as your body gets ready for labor and then it will be easier to reach.  I had a posterior cervix when I went in for my induction and it was hard for my doctor to reach it--ouch.

There's no way to know when you will go into labor.  Some people walk around 3 cm for weeks and others are completely closed and then have their baby 10 hours later. Same goes with how high or low your baby is.

  • I had the same thing at my 38 week appointment; she said she could probably try to reach it if she really went for it, but it was going to really hurt and there was no reason to. At my 40 week, she was able to reach it and tell I was 1cm dilated. But like a PP said, it doesn't mean much in terms of when you go into labor!
