Opus One??? You tried Opus One?? How was it?? Jealous!!

We savored big time! I think just the small tasting was $25 each? That's why I have more photos there than any place else -- I sipped, took a few pictures, sipped, took a few pictures....
It was indeed really good, of course. The detail that goes into making it was INSANE -- as much as I love wine and learning about wine, that was a bit much. It's *one* wine each year, and it takes that many people to perfect it? Crazy. We've been on tours all over the country but that wins the prize for number of PhDs per winery, let alone per single wine, that's for sure.
But yeah, it was really fabulous. We wouldn't have done it if it hadn't been our honeymoon, but we didn't want to hold back! I'd like to try it again, but I wouldn't be tempted to buy a bottle.
Now I go back to (happily) drinking 10 $5 bottles for the price of those two tastings.

wow - interesting stuff! what's your fave $5 bottle?

Admittedly I'm a bit out of the loop, but I did just buy a couple of $5 bottles of Two Tone Chardonnay a couple weeks ago at my tiny baby step back into wine tasting after Elena's birth. I waited until she was all of 4 weeks. But I stocked up on sale wines in mid-2009 for $2-$3 each -- I'm blanking on what they were since it's been so long since I had them, but there was NO way I would have guessed they were that cheap if I hadn't bought them myself (on my way home from a pedi appt. with Kira, LOL...she's probably been to 50 wine tastings in her life!). The nice thing about cheap wine -- as long as I can taste it first and know that it's yummy -- is that I can open a $5 bottle on a Tuesday or whatever and not feel I have to save it for when I'm "really in the mood." It's fun just to have on a normal day. Last night we opened a bottle of syrah that a friend gave us last year before I announced I was pg, and I'm hoping that didn't cost much but it hit the spot! We just have good luck finding deals -- we don't buy cheap for the sake of cheap. And we have dozens of really wonderful wineries around here, but they all tend to be $17+...still a great deal though!!!
You probably don't recall my intentional "jinx" -- in 2007 we scheduled a wine tasting party at our house for the week after my March beta. It worked -- I didn't get to participate, sticking to (hidden) apple cider myself. (I also scheduled myself to start teaching exercise classes the day after that beta, so the combo jinx worked, in any case!)
Hopefully you'll have to stop drinking wine soon, my friend...well, mostly stop.

that's great that you can find such deals on good quality stuff. i'm such a wine snob...not so much hung up on names or anything, but i am very particular about taste (though i'm not the best at describing it - dh is much better at that!). and my taste tends to be a little more expensive...usually $10-$15. and i'm not one to finish a bottle if i don't like it. i just don't see the point!
my current fave is rabbit ridge le lapin multiplicity (red blend) - at $7.49-$7.99 a bottle, it's a steal!
cal went to a couple of wine-tastings when he was a wee one but then a state law was passed forbidding minors at wine-tastings (what a drag)...so now dh & i split up!
i love your intentional jinx story!

Yeah, we're definitely wine snobbish too, which is why I go for taste and then price tag! If I don't love it, I won't buy it. I definitely made out with those clearance cases that day after the pedi appt., LOL -- that was probably a one-time bargain! I got the 2 bottles a couple weeks ago at the same place -- they were on clearance, originally $12-$14, I believe. It was nothing fancy, but I can't drink that much right now anyway, so I like not having the pressure of having to finish it and/or let DH get 80% of it!
The wine you mention sounds familiar. I'll Google but I'm quite sure we've had it. I'm just out of the loop for the best of reasons.
I love how many great wines are less than $20, and plenty are $12-$16 if you can find them as you know. It makes me happy, happy, happy.
