Night terrors at 5.5 month?

So LO has started crying at around 9-10pm every night for the last week.  When I go to get him, he is still asleep, eyes tightly shut, but red-faced wailing at the top of his lungs.  Usually the only thing calms him is nursing him, but last night he was inconsolable, screaming, eyes tightly shut, and refused to nurse.  I turned on lights, called his name, DH called his name, nothing...

Night terrors?  Something else?  What do I do?

Crap, he's doing it now.

  • My pedi said to turn on the night time music and hold DS until he stops crying.  The night time music is supposed to help reset his brain, almost like saying its bedtime.  It works for us, when I turn on the music and within seconds he stops crying and is back asleep.

    Night Terrors suck.  Good luck.

  • I'm back.

Gina, thanks, I was worried he was too young to have them, and my paranoia was making me question whether there was something wrong with his brain.

We did do the music last night out of desperation, and he eventually started nursing, so maybe that is the trick... I'll try it.

  • I don't know about night terrors, but I remember at about that age or so K was having the same thing happen.  When I researched night terrors "they" said they usually don't start until 9 months, if I recall correctly....but of course stuff like that is always different for each baby.

For us it ended when her first two teeth popped up.  We never figured out if that's what it really was, but it stopped once those teeth were up.  It was a few weeks of hell at night though, because it was just awful to have her scream but not even wake fully.  :(

  • How strange, Emma has been doing the same thing lately.  She screams in her sleep, eyes shut tight and inconsolable.  What odd baby phenomena.  Luckily she will feed in her sleep and that seems to calm her.  I hope LO gets some peace soon.

  • Odd is one way to put it, Sarah... :)  Thanks, J, I'll watch for teeth, and hope that's it.
