Babies: 3 - 6 Months

worst oil change EVER... (longggg vent)

So I made an appointment for a 30-minute oil change. DH was at work and I knew LO and I would have nothing to do. Since it was a beautiful day and Petsmart was only .4 miles away, I decided to take my dog, Bailey. I figured I would put LO in her Baby Bjorn and walk Bailey to Petsmart, wander around, pick out a toy for him, and be back within 30 min. One of the workers said he'd call when my car was ready, so we set out. Rather than waste time walking back after the car was already done, I started back early so we were there 35 minutes after my appointment. My car was still in the shop, but I figured it would be done soon so I wandered around outside and waited for the phone call. 10 minutes later, the car still wasn't done and it was starting to get windy and more cold, so I hooked Bailey's leash up to a handicapped parking sign and went inside to see when my car would be ready. While I was waiting in line with LO sleeping in her carrier, the 50-60 year-old woman in line ahead of me turned around and told me my baby was cold. When I said DD was fine, she'd be awake if she were uncomfortable, the woman said "you don't have a jacket for her, do you?" I promptly informed her that I had LO's sweatshirt in my purse and would put it on if she needed it and the woman turned back around. Almost an hour after my appointment time, I was finally able to speak to an employee, who checked on my car.

Employee: "He's draining the oil now, just got to finish and fill it back up."
Me: "You advertise a 30-minute oil change, my car has been here an hour"
Employee: "it takes 30 minutes from the time we get the car into the shop."
Me: "So I made an appointment for my car to get into the shop almost an hour later?"
Employee: *shocked look* "Sometimes we get backed up. It would have taken longer without an appoinement"

Whatever.

So while I'm waiting, back killing me from lugging around the baby for more than an hour, watching my dog outside looking miserable because he doesn't understand why I left him outside, a 40-ish year-old man comes up to me and pokes at DD's arm, waking her up, to ask how old she is. WHY WON'T THESE PEOPLE LEAVE ME ALONE?? After I answer, he points out that she's making faces at him and asks if I know what her faces mean.

Me: "she makes faces at everything, it looks like she's always trying to figure things out."
Man: "oh, so she doesn't need a diaper change, then?"

NO, poopie face is different, this man has obviously never taken care of a child.

Then, he starts poking at DD's hand, saying "what kind of grip do you have?" So I asked him to please not touch her since she puts her hands in her mouth and I don't want her getting sick. After looking offended, he asks why she isn't wearing shoes. Ummm because they're a waste of money until she starts walking and she doesn't need them.. that's why.

I can't believe I had to deal with so many idiots in one day. Thankfully my car was ready soon after and I had an excuse to leave. I won't be going back to that place!

I'm usually passive to a fault, according to my husband, so I never actually tell people they've crossed a line, no matter how badly I want to. He also thinks people judge me because I'm barely 21 and look younger.. Even if that's true, the whole situation seemed completely out of line to me.

All this because I needed a freaking oil change. I've learned my lesson, next time, DH will be there to pick me up, and I'm not coming back until my car's ready!!!!

  • Wow.  That sounds like quite the adventure.

I tend to go to oil change places where you don't even have to get out of the car.  It literally takes 10 to 15 minutes for the whole process to be done so I'm not sure why that guy was telling you it takes them 30 minutes once they get to your car!  Definitely wouldn't go back there!

  • How rude. I don't know why people think it's appropriate to touch others babies... Especially being a stranger! I'm sorry you had such a shiitty experience... I would have DH change your oil next time.

I just might.. Funny thing is, when I told DH about it, he said "Why would it take them that long? I could do it in less time than that and they're professionals!"

  • OMG!  seriously..some ppl are just annoying!  I am sorry you had to deal with these people.. touching and unsolicited comments are totally out of line!  Not to mention the fact that they all were probably of an older generation when things were done "differently"...

  • I can't believe that guy! Doesn't he know anyone else who has kids? If some stranger ever wakes up DS to ask HIM how old HE is, I will hurt them. He's just about 4 months old and CAN'T SPEAK WORDS.

What's even more creepy is that you had LO strapped to you. Usually people are more aware of personal space when you're wearing the baby. I hate people. The end.

I thought it was weird.. especially since I thought he was just looking at her. I didn't think there was even a possibility he'd touch her, since I would never do that to someone else... I guess we can't just assume other people will live up to our standards. Ugh....

    At least it's over!!!

  • Wow, that's annoying! I drive a Toyota and get so many free oil changes through their priority program. It always takes an hour at least! (except last time miraculously it took 40 min). The first time, I was there 1 1/2 hours bc they finished and FORGOT to tell me!! And this was at Toyotas dealership!
