CD start up cost?

Hi Ladies

I am not pregnant or TTC but i am trying to figure out how much i need to save to be at a point where we can TTC  and I am really interested in CDing so.... how much did it cost you to start your stash?  Did you all do CDing from the NB stage or use disposables until they fit in the one sizes?  And i guess my last question is how many loads of laundry did CDing add a week?

Like I said i am just trying to get an idea of how much the start up costs are so we can start moving in the right directions.

TIA

Re: CD start up cost?

  • I think my initial start up costs were about $400. That included my newborn stash and then my OS/larger sized stash. I bought used and that kept my costs very reasonable. Technically, if you just do prefolds, your stash could be even less expensive. Or if you want to do inexpensive pockets like Kawaiis.

I do 3 loads of laundry a week. I line-dry to keep the costs down.

  • I just started when my LO was 11weeks old in terms of my stash. Used disposables up until now. There are several alternatives like going higher end or trying out cheaper diapers that might work just as good. I can tell you my stash consists of mainly Bumgenius and Fuzzibunz and it's around 400 dollars for roughly 24 diapers and a few bags for dirty's... I am opting to not use a diaper pail since the bags work just as good. I also have GoGreen as well and those were cheap in price.
  • It all depends.  You can go economical (prefolds) or go with an assortment.  It is best to do the research, ask the questions and take baby steps.  There is one thing though, many people are happier after they switched from sposies, so starting with them should be good.

Many of the better online stores have cding 101/info.  This one pretty comprehensive, but I'd recommend checking out a few to make sure you cover all the info you're looking for.

Also, check out the FAQs on thebump.  Its at the top of the cding forum page.  Good info there too.  Good luck

how much did it cost you to start your stash? i started with 6 bum genius 'seconds' one size pockets that I got from cottonbabies and the jillians drawer trial, total cost of both was about $80 with shipping costs.  After that I added on gradually, we've been CDing for 5 months and I have probably spent about $400 but no more then $80/$100 at one time.   I've also sold off the ones I didn't like/use, and bought a lot used.

Did you all do CDing from the NB stage or use disposables until they fit in the one sizes?  I started after about a month only because I was scared.  In hindsight I wish I had started in the hospital and will do that with #2.  I will probably get about 3 dozen xs AIO's to make life easy.

And i guess my last question is how many loads of laundry did CDing add a week?  I have enough diapers to last 4 days.  I do wash every third day and do not have to worry about rushing to stuff and fold because I've got a days supply.  When I less diapers, I would put them in at night and stuff and fold in the morning, every other day.

  • I started when DS was about 11 months.  Everything I needed was about $500 however that does not include newborn stuff.  I ended up with 8 BG AIO OS, 12 Thirsties Duo Pockets size 2and 4 Kawaii, 3 knickernappies doublers, plus 3 wet bags (2 large and 1 small for the diaper bag), 24 Thirsties wipes, bum spray, a toilet sprayer (which isn't necessary until solids), and CD safe detergent and diaper creams.  And like pp said a little over 1/3 of my stash is second hand.  I wash every 3 days but DS is older so less changes.  I wish I had started earlier and am excited to CD from the getgo when we have #2.  I got most of my info from this board and these sites:

  • I've spent about $300. I need to buy a couple more covers, but even with that and a few more impulse buys, I'll be under $350.

I've got thus far: 26 fitteds, 3 xs covers, 3 s covers, a bunch of cloth wipes, 21 kawaii one-size pockets, 4 monkeydoodlez AIO smalls, and 3 ecobumz AIO size 1.

  • Start small. Buy one diaper (or a dozen prefolds) at a time. Don't invest in newborn sized fitteds (we used prefolds -- they worked great and were SO CHEAP). Buy second hand. See what works for you.

And I know you didn't ask this, but seriously -- if you wait to TTC until you know you have everything in exactly the right place, you'll never have a baby. If it comes down to having a baby or saving up for cloth diapers for your imaginary baby... have the baby.

  • Check out my blogpost about this.  I usually recommend to start off with prefolds for newborns.  Everything after that depends on whether you'll be staying at home or putting your child in daycare.  Either way, I recommend one to have a mix of diapers for different reasons.

  • Thanks Ladies - This is great information.  I think I will add $500 to my start up costs for CDs.  I can't wait till I can join this board more.  I appreciate the advice.

Allie - I am not waiting to have everything set, i am tying to get some ball park on the important things so I know i can cover them.  We have a few other things to take care of before we start TTC but I want to get most of my ducks in a row in the mean time.

Thanks again and if i convince DH about CDing i would like to try from the start.

    Have a good night.

Reported.  Please find  somewhere else to shamelessly promote your products.

OP - We spent a little over $100  in the beginning and I've just added a few more here and there over the last few months.  Total, I've spent bout $500 - $600, but I'm hopelessly addicted. That amount includes accessories too like detergent, safe creams, snappis, etc.  I have about 4 days worth of diapers, but I tend to wash every 1-2 days because I have my favorites.

I def. recommend doing a trial.  I really wish I would have.
